Jesse, here is a trick I learned last summer. I use the Dan Thompson calls and they sound good. The larger one PC-1 is raspy jackrabbit and the smaller one PC-3 is pretty much the standard cottontail call. But, these calls have a mouth piece that is a little like a trumpet mouthpiece. I have switched to using the PC-3 mostly now and when I blow it, I blow it like a trumpet. You make a raspberry sound while you are blowing. You can make it plain Jane cottontail screams or you can add the raspy ness and make sound like the rabbit is choking in its own blood. It is really dramatic the way you can use that mouth piece shape to alter the sounds. It has worked very well too. Here is a picture of the mouth piece end of the PC-3 call.
On my Hunting Page, I have the sound files where I blow it plain Jane and then Hum into it (doesn't sound good) and finally with the trumpet raspy sound where it really puts out a blood curdling sound.

I will see if these tags work for sounds too.

Here are the sounds..

Plane Jane cottontail. http://www.cctrap.com/~varmint/plain.wav

Hum into the call. http://www.cctrap.com/~varmint/hum.wav

Trumpet type Raspy with the same cottontail call. http://www.cctrap.com/~varmint/raspy.wav

Good Luck calling...

Thanks everyone for the help. I guess I didn't look hard enough.

Al, I think I'll try that PC-3 out. Thanks for the sound files too.
