How many of you know what animals are legal to shoot as ordinary game and what is protected and cannot be exported from South Africa or imported to the USA from any country.

Even if you only know one or two species, what do you think some of them are? I will list them all and the special requirements for each in a while. I ask this because I recently had an Email from a hunter who came back with a small cat he shot. He was concerned it would be held up at customs. The PH he was hunting with (in Namibia) told him to shoot it because it was a predator and "vermin" on thier property. Since the PH wanted it killed on private property and gave the hunter permission can the hunter just ship it home in the box with his ordinary game?

JJHack,

I will not answer this question as I know most of them and get get the answers very easy.

But yes sometimes there is small animals that you wouldn't even think will make CITES and they do. I don't know how often CITES gets updated but they sure could make some changes.

Safari Hunt, The fellow geskiet 'n vaalboskat in Namibia. The PH told him it was a "varmint" and he should shoot it. Now it's gettig shipped to the USA. As you know Namiba is quite lax in Exporting of trophies actually allowing you to take them on the plane with you as checked luggage. They don't care that it's not legal on the arriving end of the flight!

He was wondering what troubles he would have with it when it arrived in the USA so he emailed me. The USA will not care what country it came from only that the papers are correct. I also have to wonder if the PH had him skiet 'n gewoon huisdierkat, ek weet nie. I guess we will see when it arrives. The vaalboskat is CITES listed and will require some documents. I don't think I could get them in SA very easy?

JJHack,

The problem with a vaalboskat is that they almost look like normal house cats. Where there is house cats around they interbreed as well. I think a picture and the scull should do as trophy unless you are sure it is the real McCoy.

The vaalboskat is the original "domestic cat" or House cat. The Egyptians domesticated it long ago, it's the original species used. Interesting that today it's still a wild animal which breeds with it's modern man made, or designed reletive. The skull will need to be identified with papers in the USA as well. Not only the hide, CITES requires the papers for any body part.

I have been told that vaalboskat, or African wild cat (Felis lybica), is on CITES Appendix 2.

But have just checked the actual CITES list at http://www.cites.org/eng/append/latest_append.shtml. It is now not listed at all! At least on the website that I believe to be the official CITES list.
If it is not listed, the export should not be a problem at all. The only trouble may be if an customs official somewhere also remembers, as I have, that Felis lybica is on CITES Appendix 2. May be a good idea to keep the web address handy and be sure.
