Thanks, I drew a 2nd season Cow tag as my second choice. 6pts now, but a lot more are needed for what I want.
2 more days till we find out about Deer, I am fairly certain I am getting another preference point. Used to be we could draw with 3, now we have 7pts and still not getting drawn for the Unit we hunt.

Yep, with the winter kill this year they cut down on the tags, which in turn increased the amount of PP's needed to draw.

Oh well, the geese better watch out this year!

Sorry Mslagle1 my CO elk experience is limited to the Carbondale area.

Good luck to all that drew a tag!

My bud's and I used to hunt unit 33 every year until they doubled the price of elk tags for non-residents. That plus the gas costs made it pretty pricey for the bunch of us from Socal.

We used to drive in and get supplied in the town of Rifle at Tim's Tools sporting goods and the grocery supermarket right next door. Then we would hook up with Road 245 north into the national forest. From just south of Triangle Park (meadow) to Meadow Creek Lake their are huge herds of elk -- that is the northern edge of unit 33 in that area. Lots of folks liked the Cline Top Mesa area just to the east, but we never found a need to go there. The area gets pretty crowded with over the counter bull elk tag holders so the elk generally got pushed down into the canyons pretty quick. Those mesas and ridges are in the 9,000 ft elevation range as I recall. Lots of wide open areas to glass across, and lots of dark timber also. If you have a hard time finding the bulls, then go to the golf course in Rifle, all the really good bulls are members of the country club there and they love to watch hunters drive by.

The CO DOW has maps online that will show you the migration trails of both deer and elk in the unit, so it's no secret.

Weather can be unpredictable but the main dirt roads are good gravel based and just fine to drive when wet. But watch out for any frozen snow in the mornings. A lot of unawares non-residents without tire chains used to panic when it snowed overnite and tried to haul a$$ down the mountain at first light when it was still frozen -- all they had to do was wait until 10:00 when it was slush. And if you have chains, watch out for the idiots behind you that don't have chains because your vehicle will be the brakes for everyone behind you. We witnessed a chain-reaction pile up right next to our camp one year and one truck's ATV trailer ended up hanging over the edge of the canyon.

Good luck, have fun, and be careful. We used to meet a lot of nice folks from all over the country up in that area, and the towns folk love hunters in that area. Glenwood Springs just a short drive east on the I-70 had a full shopping mall as I recall from the last time I was there about ten years ago.

I've only been north of there. I'd defer to some of the bow guys for suggestions, but I'm thinking go above the timber....
