The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) is pleased to sponsor three bills during the current session of the State Legislature intended to help protect and promote California's hunting heritage.

The first bill, AB 979 by Assembly Member Tom Berryhill (R-Modesto), would keep local governments from passing ordinances which interfere with hunting and fishing activities. The bill is in response to increasing efforts by urban cities and counties to restrict or even outright ban hunting within their jurisdictions. A similar COHA-sponsored bill, AB 815 (Berryhill), was vetoed by the Governor last fall due to the severity of the budget crisis.

Another COHA-sponsored bill by Assembly Member Berryhill, AB 1423, would limit commercial hunting club fees and exempt properties under conservation easement from the requirement. Due to recent changes in the Fish and Game Code, commercial hunting club fees have substantially escalated. In some cases, commercial hunting clubs are now facing fees thousands of dollars higher than before, resulting in increased costs to their members and a reduction in hunting opportunity.

Finally, Senator Tom Harman has introduced SB 589, a COHA-sponsored measure which would to protect state hunting license tag and stamp fees from being used for non-game purposes. The bill would not only require that such fees only be used for specified game species conservation and hunting purposes, but would allow sportsmen's groups the opportunity to review and provide comment on proposed projects funded with the revenues.

All three bills will likely face their first hearing in April.

Special Youth Turkey Season -- March 21 and 22

On the weekend of March 21 and 22, California will hold its first-ever Special Youth Turkey Season for hunters 16 years of age and younger who hold a junior hunting license. This new special season will allow youth an early opportunity to hunt prior to the opening of the general spring turkey season that runs March 28 through May 3.
At the direct request of the COHA and the National Wild Turkey Federation, the Commission formally approved the additional special youth season at their December 2008 meeting. With this additional youth turkey hunting opportunity, California now boasts the most liberal turkey hunting regulations in the nation.
