I have dedicated myself to learning this sweet little area of BLM, but it requires a strenuous 4 mile hike over a ridge (or a 1/4 mile drive over flat private land) to reach it. BLM/public land access and pig hunting in this part of California has worn me out. Literally over a hundred miles of hiking over the last year with a single shot opportunity before legal light leaves me exasperated. Please, post up some inspiring stories to keep me motivated! :)

I found a moderate amount of fresh hog-rooted up ground today, but the word of the day was: TICKs!!! I had to cut my hog hike (won't call it a hunt) short as I cleared 200-300 ticks off my cloths in 4 miles of walking. 20 feet of waist high brush netted 12-20 ticks on my pants each time. When I got to the point that serious bush whacking through 6' brush was required (over my head with ticks dropping down my shirt collar) I decided it wasn't worth it. I've had a bull's eye rash and taken an antibiotic for Lyme's disease before and would rather not repeat it. Almost a miracle to make it home and shower up without a single blood sucker attached.

Watch yourselves out there; I have several friends whose lives have been destroyed by Lyme Disease and it is VERY prevalent in certain areas of the western Sierras. There is no fix if you contract it and end up with a serious chronic autoimmune reaction. I am an ICU RN and have two hard working, very smart coworkers whose lives have been ruined due to this condition; they both contracted it in the Kaweah drainage where I got my bull's eye bite reaction.

Take care friends!

When I use to hunt in cali I treated my clothes with Permethrin, spray around the leg and arm and neck cuffs, works great. Ticks are always moving upward so u want your pant leg cuffs tucked inside the boot. Suprise u didn't get any posiin oak that will mess up your luv life for a little while....lol
Thnx for the hunting adventure report. ..tra
