Been pretty quite here lately so thought I would post something up!

So I'll be heading out to SW Colorado for archery elk next month and trying to plan which week to go. What do you take into consideration when planning your hunt time? Moon phase, opening weekend, last part of the month during the rut or.....?

The muzzleloaders will generally start the weekend after Labor Day, so you'll be competing with them - but that is also when the rut starts kicking in...

What unit are you hunting?

We are headed to NW Colorado and chose the last week of the season because of the dark moon, most likely to be rutting (according to the land owner) and muzzleloader season being over. It is my first trip to Colorado so I will know a lot more in a month or so. Good luck

Slopoke, Don't know how much the dark moon will help, but prolly good for playing pranks on your buddies in camp

I have no idea about the moon either, but have noticed ithas an impact on the fishing a pig hunting around here. I just read an article yesterday in Eastman’s Journal that recommended September 21-26 as good dates for a western elk hunt so I’ll run with it. I’m sure there will be big 8x8’s behind every tree (well there are when I fall asleep thinking about the trip!). In all seriousness the pranks will start before camp…A week away from work and cell phones with a few good buddies. Doesn’t get much better than that

Yup seen the same article on the moon phase. Have fished tuna off Socal for many years and hear people say the moon does affect fishing. I cant say Ive seen any difference. If the fish are there, you just have to find them. Same would go for elk hunting.

Ill be there second week of Sept, full moon... Just have to find them!

I usually plan the 2nd or 3rd week for archery in the high country. Last year was tough, not much vocal activity from the bulls. Mix up the calling, bugle/cow/bugle/cow and hope for the best result. I didn't draw a tag this year, still debating an OTC tag.

Non stop rain, flash floods (hurricane Norbert) and the roads weren't much better. Was able to hunt around my camping area, seen a few cows but no opportunity. The roads were just too muddy to move to a different area. Called it off after 5 days, 3 days of it was rain.

Heading to Az next week for sons cow elk youth hunt. Hoping for better weather.
