Well i'm finally taking the time to post my hunt. I scouted a few days prior to the hunt and did not find any elk untill the evening before opener. Opening morning I called in a small five point to 34 yards and let him go to find something better. Over the next several days the elk were not vocal at all. I did see several nice bulls but it was very tough to get into range for a shot since they were all up at 13,000' well above tree line. I did pass on another five point and missed a nice six point I estimate would have been a 300"+ bull. On the sixth day of the hunt I glassed this bull walk down into the tree's. After a failed stalk on the heard bull I decided to go give this bull a try. After i got set up in a small clearing I started to blow some cow calls. He never did sound off and answer me , but I continued to call and 25 minutes later I could see his antlers coming right toward me. When he got to 65yards I waited for him to get broadside and took the shot. The bull droped instantly. Over the next two days I packed the meat back to camp. [attachment=55466:phpqO2nHbPM.jpg]

Very nice looking bull. Thanks for the story to go along with it. Sounds like you were into elk, that is what it's all about. Nice job.

Very nice! What GMU were you hunting? How far did you have to pack it out?

Regards

I hunted unit 67 and it was actually a farely easy pack out. I was in the La Garita wilderness about two miles in and all down hill to the road.

Congrats on a very nice bull. Thanks for the story also. I'm curious as to how the elk only opener for rifle is going. Opening day was yesterday. It looks like they got some good cold weather to move the elk. I'll have my chance in three weeks. Again, Ridgeside, that is a great bull!

That sounds like a great hunt. Very nice bull and congrats to you on your success!

I'm starting to get up there in points in CO now and plan to do a muzzleloader hunt too in the coming years.
