Got into our spot early, and hiked 2 or 3 miles. Glassed some beautiful country, and spotted 2 coyotes. No elk in the morning. Around lunchtime we headed into another area, and I spotted 2 cows and a spike. We chased them uphill for about 4 miles, right into another group of hunters. Those cows are gone now lol. Called it a day early as we were all whipped from the hike. Had a nice dinner at a local Italian joint, now headed to bed. Going back up tomorrow morning where we saw the cows and spike, there were a few other cows harvested in the area. Hoping for better luck tomorrow! Can't upload pics here, but there will be a full report when we get home.

Well day three started out with us hiking a mile into a wilderness area. We stayed in there til around noon, seeing nothing but some tracks. One of our guys found a warm pile of elk poo but no elk. We decided to take it easy and road hunt the remainder of the day, and ended up on the southern edge of our zone, and we met a young kid who got his first bull, a 5x4. In a near y camp there was a forkie and a cow hanging, and we watched some drunk idiots blow the foot off a small forkie. He shot at it four times, hitting the foot and a gut shot. Sloppy work. It was like D-14. But we did see a few deer today, including a nice 3x3 at sundown. Going back to where we saw the cows on Saturday, we figure the weekend warriors are gone now so hopefully things settle down. At this point I will shoot a calf lol. This is a meat hunt, and calves are bigger than D-14 deer so they are on the menu. Wish us luck! Will update tomorrow night, hopefully with good news of a kill (or three if we are lucky haha!). Stay tuned for more exciting Colorado elk hunting action, right here on Jesse's. your local source for tall tales, fish stories, and occausionally successful hunts :)

Day four: Got into our spot an hour before sunrise. Just ahead of us, a bull is bugling his fool head off. After sunrise, we glass them til noon from about 1,000 yds. There was private land between us and them, and it turned out they ended up being on landlocked BLM land so we had to let em go. Saw some deer today, and heard some shots, but in the end no shots fired by us. Tomorrow is our last day to hunt, so we're desperate lol. At this point I will drop a calf!

Well, we gave it 200%, but we struck out. Tag soup, anyone? We hiked well over 20 miles in 5 days, saw a lot of beautiful country, and even saw a few critters. But in the end, the elusive wapiti gave us the slip. Heading home in the morning, ready to see my wife and sons. Hope you all are having a great season! I will upload pics as soon as I get a chance!

Well you gave it a go. Takes a long time to learn an out of state location and know when to setup where. You didn't have the best weather for elk either. Thanks for the reports! We leave Monday the 28th.

Yeah the weather was way too nice, and we had a full moon all week. They were moving around at night.

Maybe next year we can meet up for 2nd rifle. I am on a guided hunt for 1st rifle but it is a short drive to Meeker from my 1st hunt. I know many get their elk 1st couple days in my zone so who knows. Wish I could have gone with you this year. I am really missing it. D14 is desolate, empty and few signs of life. Might as well hunt the Mojave mid summer.

Sounds like a plan Joe. Might be doing archery, but I do love the rifle season!
