Been trying to obtain reloads that close in on that 10fps or so consistency. I uniform my primer pockets with a sinclair tool, have sorted brass to + or - 1 grain, weigh bullets to same effect. I have tried throwing charges, weighing them each seperately and have tried a electronic scale. Still I get extreem spreads of about 30 fps or more. What gives, any help out here on what I can do or am doing wrong?

I am shooting a rem700 with a Shilen barrel and trigger in .243 and a ruger #1 in .223

I think that 30 fps +or- is pretty damn consistant. Remember it's not rocket science.

Doesn't look like you're doing anything wrong. 30 fps extreme spread is perfectly ok... Especially when comparing factory ammo that I have chronographed as much as "200 fps" difference between rounds out of the "same box" of ammo. A real confidence builder there, eh? (not) LOL

Also, standard deviation &/or extreme spread often times does not equal better accuracy. In fact, it can & often produces LESS accuracy.

While low velocity spreads are a nice achievement, excellent Accuracy & high velocity are far more important, at least in a hunting round. (and obviously accuracy in a target gun).

My accuaracy is great, 1/4 to 1/2 inch groups from the load I am shooting. At 200 and 300 yards my groups are still tight, 1 1/2 average at 300. At 400 and beyond it shoots okay but starts to string the shots in a verticle pattern. I am shooting a Shilen Match barrel in a 243 win with a 1-10" twist. 95 Grain Nosler balistic tips and H4835sc powder. I thought it may be the bullet but I have tried Sierra, Hornady and Speer with the same results. I may just be asking to much from myself and rifle but that's why I shoot, to gain perfection. LOL

Don't know what velocity you are getting to run ballistics, but could your bullets be going sub-sonic out at the 400 yard mark and destabilizing causing the shot strings?

I think 30 fps is pretty darn tight a distribution. Are chrony's +/- 1% accurate?

LOL... I think you have arrived... and I totally agree on the perfection part... a worthy goal for sure.

My pet 22-250 wears a premium douglas barrel & is a tack driver like your 243. A real sweetheart !

Now go kill something :)

Talldrink, I like the perfection attitude!

You do what I do but I am quite satisfied with more spread and just under MOA accuracy. The next step might be to look into consistent neck tension. I assume you neck size only, you might want to turn your necks and anneal them (see Varmint Al's site). This is getting into the minutiae of the problem but should give you months of new frustration! LOL

Don't know if that helps or not, but there just aren't that many variables left that I know of...

Good Luck.

Try loading a single case at the range. All cases will have different capacities and different pressures and velocities as a result. ~AMMOe

My average velocity is abround 2950fps, 15 feet from muzzle. they should not be going subsonic at 400 yards. I will shoot through my crony at 400 yards this weekend to make sure. I have ordered a sinclaire outside neck turner but it has not come in yet. I neck size only as of now and only full size them when they become hard to chamber. Also I trim then at every reload. Have been reloading for 25 or so years but only got into presicion (spelling) about a year ago after the custom rifle built. It is fun and frustrating.

Got back last week from Coues deer hunt, 294 yards on the range finder. 1 shot kill. Would post pic but can't figure it out.

Thanks for all the info people, it really helps.

I tried neck turning my 222 several years ago. Unless your chamber is cut to a specific diameter it really does not help. If any thing it ruined the accuracy of the gun. You may try bullets from either Berger or Cook or any one else that manufactures Bench Rest quality projectiles.
From what I've read you seem to be on the edge that very few hunters try to acheive. My friends think I'm nuts for demanding absolute perfection from the weapons that I hunt with. Get a subscription of Handloader Magazine. There's usually some good data in there as well.
I don't know if Prescision Shooter is still around.

Have fun.
