I took this boar on Dec 16 2007 with a 30-06 using copper bullets. I used the Federal Premium Vital Shock cartridges in 30-06 with 165 grain Barnes TripleShock (TSX) bullets.

I took two shots. The first was as the hog was running directly away from at about 50 yards. That shot entered on the right side just forward of the ham and just under the spine. It broke his spine and his rear legs were disabled. The bullet pictures are of the bullet recovered from this shot. I had to take a second shot to the heart-lung area to put it down. That bullet went in the right side and exited out the left lower jaw (I was again shooting from the rear).

It looks like the bullet performed just as advertised with the near perfect mushrooming and intact core.

This is my second wild pig, the last one I got was in Oct 2005.

The live weight on this boar was somewhere between 180 to 200 lbs. The tusks measured aroung 3 3/8 inches.

I was hunting on the Pancho Rico Ranch in Monterey County near San Ardo, CA. This was a guided hunt. The
guide was a great guy named David Rossi. He is co-owner of the 5000 acre cattle ranch. It was an excellent
weekend hunt. David's place inlcudes a lot of really nice country and he is an experienced, friendly guide. I will be going back to his ranch.

Here's the web site:

Very Nice !

My son used the same kind of bullets in .270 to take his first deer. They performed well !

Congrats on the pig, looks really nice.

I am curious though looking at the website for the ranch and particular the pricing structure for rifle pig hunting.

it was my understanding that private ranches can charge for access to their land but in essence not charge for the pig or a "trophy" fee either since no land owner owns the actual game on his or her land. Am I incorrect in that assumption?

JP, I'm curious where you got that information.

To my knowledge (which may be incorrect) the guide can charge on pretty much any fee structure he wants...public or private land. Trophy fees are actually quite common, and should definitely be one of your questions when you decide to book a hunt.

You are correct that the "people" of the state own the animals, but that doesn't designate what the guide can or cannot charge you. He's charging you for his services (ostensibly it's easier to find a "meat" pig than a "trophy"), not for the animal.

Mike, thanks for posting up regarding the bullet performance. A lot of folks are, understandably, very interested in the performance of the Barnes bullets right now. Your experience matches everything I've been told. I have yet to take an animal with the Barnes bullets... but look forward to the opportunity soon!

Does anyone know where to get some TSX ammo in the Santa Clarita area?

Yes, I did camp on the ranch. They have a great group camping area with running water, outhouse, propane stoves, grills, and lamps. You can bring your own tent/rig or use the camping trailer on site (sleeps up to 3). There is also a shooting range at the camp site. There is a field dressing setup with two gambrels.

On the subject of the trophy fee, I was fine with it. I actually wanted a meat pig, but after 2 days of hunting we did not come across anything in shooting range (via spot and stalk). It was on my last morning as we were heading back to camp that we came across this boar around 9am (we had started at 6am). I guess he just stayed out a little too late for his own good. David Rossi definitely earned his fee that weekend. We did some tough hiking straight up and down canyon slopes that would have been too steep to ski on if they were snow covered. We also used his jeep quite a bit, but I had specifically asked to go on foot as much as possible.

BTW, to compare bullet peformance, this is a recovered bullet from my previous pig. That was a 150lb sow. This Winchester Super X Silvertip 30-06 cartridge with 150 grain bullet (http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog/cfrdetail.aspx?symbol=X30063&bn=1&type=44) was recovered from the right upper shoulder bone. The shot was from about 40 yards, entered heart-lung area on the left side and lodged onto the right shoulder bone. That shot slammed the animal into the hillside that it was running across, then it slid down a few yards and expired.

All that I shoot out of my 25-06 are Barnes Bullets... I load my own... and have toned them down below maximum... but they are still pushing out at about 3000 feet per second... I have shot numerous pigs, deer (blacktail, mulie, whitetail), bear, and coyotes with these bullets. I've recovered about 30% of the bullets. They usually go right through. The bullets that I've recovered all had hit pretty significant bone. They all mushroomed exactly like the bullet above, and all retained about 95% of their weight. I've only had one bullet that lost a petal, and that was on my South Dakota whitetail, after hitting some heavy bones... I'm a firm believer in the Barnes bullet performance...
