Decided to check out the place for the last day of A zone. And ran into a bunch above one of the ponds.
I have never been there before, so it was just a case of beginners luck. I made the mistake of shooting a BIG one(164lb) and having a long drag by myself. Next time I need to bring a partner or not be so greedy

I was about a half mile from the truck in the creek bed below the parking lot.(hour 5 of dragging) I was watching the helicopters and wondering if I should abandon the hog and get out of there. The fire made it pretty close, about one hill away

I was coming through there yesterday about 2:30pm, so a couple cars parked at the parking lot. Was there many more people hunting that area, or where they hikers? I've thought about trying that place, maybe a mid week hunt.

Mel:
There where three groups of 2 hunter and one single hunter. Also one guy who signed in and parked up the road.
A pair of hunters walked between me and the hogs, and then a half hour later walked back again the other direction. the hogs held tight for another half hour before they started to move. I head shot the boar at 100 yrds and the other hogs jumped and then went back to feeding without running. I sat and watched them feed over the next ridge before I started skinning.. I did hear two shots a little later and ran into that hunter at the parking lot, He said he missed.

Is this area open all year round for rifle? I noticed in the pig hunting book that DFG puts out it say archery or shotgun, is this book out dated? Thanks for the info!

At Upper Cottonwood you can use rifle. At Lower Cottonwood and San Luis Wildlife Areas it is archery and shotgun only.

I wasn't aware you could hunt up there. All I ever do is just fish at the San Luis Reservoir. Nice to know now though :).
