Well plans changed for me recently, instead of trying for CA archery deer this season a friend of mine talked me into going up to Oregon for a season-opener bow elk hunt through the first week of September.

Just got my tag in the mail and I'm pumped... We'll be doing some treestand hunting as well as spot and stalk in some fairly mellow terrain, all public land. I've never hunted elk (or even deer), so its a due-paying mission for sure but who knows, I might get a shot at a cow! My buddy has had a few good opportunities over the past years but hasn't been able to get one yet, hopefully one of us gets lucky. I'll take along a video cam to try and get some action footage.

When I started hunting the beginning of this year, one of my biggest motivators was an eventual dream bow hunt, going for Rocky Mountain Elk DIY.. never imagined I'd be doing it so soon! 3 weeks to go.... Now the hardest part, waiting!!!

Dang, brother! You're moving fast... from newbie to elk hunter in a year!

Good luck up there! I'm jealous. No elk for me in 2008, but I'm sure looking forward to 2009!

That's awesome hifi55. I have had elk pass by me within three to four feet and they never knew I was there. They are huge. Your heart will be pumping like a jackhammer and your hands shaking like you just had twenty cups of coffee. It is an awesome feeling to be that close to big game animals. Let us know how you did. Good luck, I'll have my chance in Colorado on third season deer and elk. HUNTNFOOL13

Have fun, learn alot and good luck.
You did it right by just biting the bullet and going for it.
If you keep putting it off, it won't happen.

I hope to get out and bowhunt elk sometime soon.

Good luck to you! I too am looking forward to my first elk hunt this November in Oregon's West Murderer's Creek Unit, any elk tag! Without hijacking the thread if anyone has any pointers on the area I would greatly appreciate it. I am busy looking at maps, aerials, and making calls trying to get info together.

I hunted a lot in Eastern Oregon I went to college there it has been a long time since I've been there but Mt Emily just out side of Lagrand Or was the best for deer and Elk I harvested two elk while I was in school and at that time the avg elk per hunter was 1 in 7 years it was 20 min from school we were able to scout a lot. What part of EO are you going? and the best of luck to you
