I came up with a couple of old remote controls to practice on. My questions are: 1. Can you solder through the coating on the board? Does it melt away? 2. Can I use alcohol to clean the soldering point? I had read to use laquer thinner, but wanteds to know if alcohol would work too. Thanks again for all the help. There are really a bunch of nice guys on here.

Volhunter,

I just use a knife or flat tip screwdriver to scrape off the coating on the boards where I want to solder. Laquer thinner will remove th coating but it's a pain to add the extra work. I don't think alcohol will cut lacquer.

and Volhunter, as far as your 2nd question, use a damp sponge or folded up damp rag to clean your solder tip.

Make sure the tip is good and hot then wipe it across the sponge.  The steam will help clean off the tip and make it nice and bright.  Keep it tinned with solder all the time.

I wipe mine everytime I take it out of a holder to solder something
