I have read that FHL only allows you to have one guest during your cow elk tag hunt. I was sure that Bubba had a couple of cousins/uncles/extras with him when he did his hunt. Can anyone clear this up? How does a guy load one of these in his truck? I remember Bubba saying that the cow elk averaged about 280-300 lbs. dressed.

We always quartered our elk. The first thing you gotta worry about is getting drawn for the tag. If you get that, then you can worry about getting an elk in the truck. P.S. #300 dressed is an awfully small elk, my hunting buddies back in Idaho would ask if it had spots? -had to be there I guess. There was just this long deer hunting trip story that no one wants to hear, but it seemed to carry over into all our hunting. But, about the other guests in the field with you, I only ever had military friends with me, so I don't know what to tell you on that. Maybe you should call the game station and ask. Don't email though because they like to give jackass lame sarcastic reply's.

Good Luck
Cheers

There were four of us, but two of us drew as a party. So we both had one guest. A couple of other guys from JHO were there but they were hunting in the "non-Elk zones", no one was allowed in the Elk zones unless you had an Elk tag. I don't remember all the zones, but they inlcuded a few that were usually closed all year. Total of 7 or 8 zones were reserved. We shot ours in 12B. So both you and your guest must attend the orientation before the day befire the unt. It was not easy. Finding them proved harder than we thought. Get high and glass. We ran into some very heavy tined bucks, but they were in closed areas, 12A. Also, we kept running into bulls. Man are they awesome. Of course, if we were hunting Bulls we would probably not have seen any almost everday. The cows we shot were in a herd of about 30 with one nice bull herding them around.

My cow was 284 pounds dressed, my buddies was 324 lbs dressed (he shot the biggest of the first period.) These are the smallest of the Elk species, Tule.

I just got my DFG letter two weeks ago. My cow was 3 1/2 years old. My buddies Elk was 4 1/2 years old.

Thanks Jesse, I knew you would come through with some valuable information. I followed your whole ordeal, through the 9/11 setback and waiting out another year.

How did you load up a 300 lb. animal? Were all four of you together, that was smart on your part.

Areas like the front tank range, and 20, were not accessible I assume. Did most of the other hunters go into area 16, and 9? I have seen the elk in 19, 24, and 12A.

All four of us were together. We put both elk in the back of the truck between all four of us.

The Elk were defintiely hanging out in those closed areas. We could only watch them hoping they would come out the first day. Those areas you mentioned were definitley on the allowable list to hunt. Area 12b was the hottest.
