I went to the CDA dinner in San Berdo the other night and bought 2 cow elk vouchers for this year.

They are for Utah and are good for all units within the area I choose. I can hunt each unit in my chosen area for the complete season. I have never hunted Elk, nor ever hunted out of state. I figured a cow elk hunt is a good way to learn a little about elk and taste the waters of a different state.

I am looking for advice on areas that hold elk and what I might expect from this type of hunt. I am starting my homework now.

Any information and suggestions on areas, units, dates, or the such is much appreciated.

I will either camp or stay in my buddies trailer that we tow out there. Not sure what terrain is even like.

Thanks in advance for any help you might provide.

I wondered who got the bid on the vouchers since I was there & bid on the keys for the safe and rifle my wife was drawn for the Weatherby but I wanted the safe.Years ago on our way to Colorado up I 15 in Utah we stopped at a rest area before the I 70 turn off .As we were driving to I 70 my wife noticed what she thought were deer in behind a frwyfence up on a hill but when I looked I corrected her it was a group of cow elk, that area has grasslands and pinion junipers in the Fish Lake NF.Hills and mtns interspersed with grasslands.I studied range mgt in conjunction with earning a degree in wildlife mgt and will have to see if I can find any of my tech manuals that will have the info you want..

That's kinda cool, Deadducks. Great way to get out and hunt elk a little bit, get some excellent meat and explore some of Utah for future adventures.

Can't help much with picking an area, but just had to drop my congrats to you on picking up those vouchers.

Since it's your first time to hunt elk and first time in utah, my advise is to hire a guide. norther, central utah are almost private land ,the elk in the southern portion are hard to hunt. try utah dnr look for the forum, they have lots of info . good luck! or if you want i'll give the info of the guide.
