****SPECIAL PRE-SEASON DEAL ON HEVISHOT****

HEVISHOT™ was founded by hunters who were tired of the poor performance of steel shot.  Last year was the first season HEVISHOT ™ was available to the general public, and the response was amazing.  This year HEVISHOT™ has co-branded with Remington Arms Company for retail shotgun shells. HEVISHOT™ will continue to sell directly to hunters via the Internet, and you can still call your order in to (541) 367-3522.

Most retailers begin stocking ammunition in August.  Therefore, HEVISHOT™ is going to make CWA eNews subscribers a special offer.  From now until August 31st, 2002, we will be offering a case (250 cartridge) for $345.00 OR a mini-case (100 cartridge) for
$170.00.  Both of these offers come with free shipping!  But you'd better act now!  This is the last time you'll see HEVISHOT™ at this price.

Just click https://www.hevishot.com/groups/cwa/index.html to get HEVISHOT below wholesale prices!

****CWA HIRES NEW DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT****

CWA is pleased to announce that Mark Bergstrom has joined us as our new development director.  . CWA is in the process of expanding its major donor, foundation, planned giving, and corporate sponsorships programs. We look forward to Mark leading this effort.

Mark's experience in the conservation and development arena is significant. Mark comes from California Trout, where he served as the executive director for the past four years. During his tenure, he was successful in tripling the organization's budget and
doubling its staff in addition to leading a number of major coldwater fisheries initiatives and programs. Prior to his involvement with CalTrout, he spent 23 years in the transportation management and consulting business in senior management positions.

Mark is an avid waterfowler and has spent many a day in duck blinds throughout the grasslands, Sacramento valley, and northeastern California. He is a graduate of the University of California at Davis and presently resides in San Francisco with his wife,
Caroline; and two children, Matthew and Kate; and yellow Lab, Gauge. We all welcome Mark and look forward to his association with CWA.

**** U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE FINALIZES DUCK SEASON ALTERNATIVES****

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently announced the finalized set of regulatory alternatives to be considered for the upcoming duck-hunting season.

USFWS has agreed to extend opening and closing framework dates in the "liberal" and "moderate" regulatory alternatives that are considered for the regular duck-hunting season. Framework dates are the earliest and latest dates during which states may hold their duck-hunting seasons. The traditional opening date of the Saturday nearest October 1 has been changed to the Saturday nearest September 24. The traditional closing date of the Sunday nearest January 20 has been changed to the last Sunday in January. Framework dates in the "restrictive" and "very restrictive" alternatives remain
unchanged.

USFWS and biologists from Pacific Flyway states are currently reviewing waterfowl population and wetland habitat data to determine which regulatory alternative will be offered to duck hunters this fall.  If the "moderate" or "liberal" package is adopted in the
Pacific Flyway, the California Fish and Game Commission will have the option to extend the California waterfowl season a week later than in previous years (to January 26 in 2002).

The Commission will discuss the proposed state waterfowl regulations at their meeting on August 2 in San Luis Obispo, and adopt them on August 30 in Oakland.  CWA encourages all hunters to voice their opinions.  For more information and instructions on how to get involved, visit the Commission home page at htp://www.dfg.ca.gov/fg_comm/index.html.

****CWA SPONSORS DELTA WATERFOWL STUDENT AWARD****

At the recent Delta Waterfowl Student Seminars in Canada, CWA sponsored a "best presentation" award for the Delta Waterfowl students in a doctorate program. These Masters and Ph.D. students are preparing to become the finest waterfowl researchers in North America. Their research is cutting-edge and will most certainly be used to help waterfowl populations in the future.

This year's winner for best presentation is Ryan Harrigan, who presented his DNA research on the genetic origins of mallards and black ducks and how mallards may influence American black ducks in the eastern areas of the continent. Harrigan is a Ph.D. student at Boston University and will receive a $250(US) award for his excellent work.

****CWA AND CDFG AGREE ON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE 2002-03 CALIFORNIA WATERFOWL HARVEST REGULATIONS****

At the California Waterfowl Association (CWA) board meeting on August 16, the Board and CDFG reached agreement on recommendations for the 2002-03 waterfowl hunting season. These recommendations required considerable time, effort, and discussion, and incorporated both biological concerns and hunter desires as determined by CDFG and CWA staff and sample polls of CWA members. The Board's decision was a difficult one, but it was based upon their desire to act in the best interest of California's duck hunters, waterfowl populations, and sustaining the future of waterfowling.

To view CWA's position on the 2002-03 California waterfowl harvest regulations, click
http://www.calwaterfowl.org/Currentevents32.htm

These recommendations do not represent the official position of the Fish and Game Commission, which will meet on August 30 in Oakland to finalize regulations.
