This e-mail was forwarded to me. The California Waterfowl Association has teamed up with this group to fight against limited domestic ferret amnesty. Tsk, tsk, tsk, the anti hunting tone of this e-mail is clear to any critical reader/thinker. IF they are against trapping for recreation then they are against hunting.

Please tell CWA to get out of bed with these type of groups and to stop opposing the legalization of a friggin domestic animal that is legal in the rest of N. America (with no friggin problems).

"Your message was forwarded to me by our Washington office - sorry it's taken so long to respond. Thanks so much for contacting us about our views on hunting and trapping.

To best answer your question, let me begin by explaining the mission of our organization. Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the conservation and protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. We concentrate our efforts on two major environmental threats: the accelerating rate of species extinctions and the associated loss of biological diversity due to habitat alteration and destruction. Defenders works to restore populations of native species throughout North America, and we have long focused on large carnivore conservation, particularly of wolves and grizzly bears.
Defenders does not maintain a formal policy about hunting because, in general, hunting issues fall outside the scope of our mission. In general, we do not get involved on either side of the hunting debate, though if issues are brought to our attention we address each one on a case-by-case basis. Defenders opposes all trapping that inflicts pain or causes injury, damages ecological systems, is non-selective, or is conducted for profit or for recreation.

Defenders would become active in cases where hunting pressures threaten populations of a native species or clearly impact other facets of biological diversity. For example, in some cases the hunting of top predators might threaten those populations or disrupt the natural balance within an ecosystem. We also oppose hunting of species under the guise of protecting other species. For example, we have objected to hunting of mountain lions in New Mexico for the purpose of protecting bighorn sheep populations, since the reason for sheep decline in that state is primarily due to habitat loss. We have also been vocal in situations where the hunting method is objectionable or unsportsmanlike, as with airborne hunting wolves in Alaska, which we consider to be unfair chase.

We do not advocate game farms or non-native species restoration.

Please feel free to contact me by email or phone if you have further questions.

Regards,

Lisa

BTW, Defenders of Wildlife are against Wild Turkeys being introduced into California as they are not a native species having gone extinct in California over 10,000 years ago.
