Really!!! Wooowww. I don't know why I always thought that it was illegal to deer hunt in ca with an ar15
I'm stoked!!! I'll have to post a pic of my set up when I get a chance

Yeah

They're legal but depending on how you set it up, there are bolt action rifles that weigh less and perform better. But I carry a 10rd magazine in my R25 (.308) when hunting in areas where there's a good chance I might come across pot farmers or drug mules.

.223 on deer

I don't think there is a legality issue with 5 round magazines in CA. I would call the Wildlife office and double check.

I would say that in my opinion the .223 just isn't the right round for deer. You can get clean kills with the .223 but it's not a reliable as a .243 and up. My personal minimum for caliber is .270 for whitetail. I can and have made kills with a .243, but prefer the guaranteed stopping power of the .270.

As long as the gun is CA legal, then you can hunt with it. There are NO capacity restrictions for hunting with Rifles/Pistols

I ask the same question some years ago when I decided to my Garand jump shooting deer and the answer is.....DFG doesn't regulate magazine capacity for rifles, only shotguns. The magazine capacity falls under the jurisdiction of CA DOJ. Since we're all limited to 10 rounds here, that's the answer.

DGF rules does not say any limit of rounds in a hunting rifle. Registered pre-ban AR-15 rifle should be able to use more than 10 rds. magazine. If your AR Rifle is not a PRE-BAN you can not use more than 10 rds. mag. Make sure you use non-lead bullet when you hunt in Condor zone. Federal hunting rules states only 5 rds. mag. When you hunt in military base/reservation, federal rules might apply. (Any member please let me know if I was wrong. )

ya the only thing i have been wondering about is using .223/.556 on a deer, i have had issues with .243 dropping a deer. I am still unsure if i am going to do it. wont know until next year.
How ever i have check a lot of places about this and it seems a lot of people don't have fait in the stopping power behind the round, but any one that i have seen that has posted about it has only said good things. I have found that cabelas makes a round for hunting that is in .223

I am just going to have to research it some more

If your having issues with .243 killing a deer I wouldn't recommend a .223.

im going to agree with goindeep. the .223 has killed alot of deer, but that does not mean its the best tool for the job or even a good tool for the job. if thats all you had then i would say use it and be picky on your shots. but if you are having issues with a .243 killing deer then why would you want to step down in cal. you might want to think about a step up in cal. i think the .243 is a fine deer rifle but alot of people dont agree.

^^^ Yeah, .243 is a great deer round, but if you are having trouble making that work then you should not be stepping down in size. Unless you want to use the AR cuz you could pump 10rds into the Deer in a few seconds, that should do the trick.....

As far as I know Cabelas does not "make" ammunition. They do Carry a lot of hunting ammo for the .223 though.

Thanks for pointing that out. I should worded that better. They carry .223 hunting ammo.
Sorry for the confusion

Ya I reallydont think I would use my Ar for deer hunting. I'll probably stick with my 270. And stick to coyotes with my Ar. Unless I start building an Ar 10.

I have been reading about a pretty good round that might interest you. 243wssm. It will work with the Ar 15 lower. kinda pricy to get an upper in 243wssm but might be a good coyote/deer round. Heck looking at the ballistics makes me think it might not be bad on blk bear with the right shot placement.

You'll love it in .308 and you have a wide variety of bullets to pick from. Far less recoil than a bolt action too. I got an R25 and love it.
