You know, I never heard of this hunt. Do you know when it took place last. 600 pigs seems like a lot of tags to issue out, but if the population is that high it may be true. They probably did it like they do the Lake Sonoma hunts, send in a postcard. Maybe you should contact the DFG and see if they are running this hunt again and what needs to be done to get in on it. I know there are a coulple of guides up that way, but they are a little pricey, something like $350 for a one day hunt. If you look into it, let us know what you find out. Good Luck. Maybe I'll email DFG and see what they say, I let you know what I find out if anything.

Here is patial stories out of the Modesto Bee

PIGS RUN AMOK; HUNTING IS OK'D
Citing an exploding population of wild pigs, Stanislaus County officials decided this week to allow people to hunt the animals in Frank Raines Park, located 20 miles west of Patterson.

Pig hunting will be Aug. 9 through Sept. 21 in the Minniear day use area of the park. Hunters need a $10 county permit along with a state license.

Phil McKay of the Department of Fish and Game told supervisors that the number of feral pigs has exploded in the state and the related property

HUNTERS GO HOG WILD OVER FRANK RAINES PERMITS

PIG HUNT DEMAND GREAT FOR LAND WEST OF PATTERSON
For longtime area hunters, last week's announcement by Stanislaus County officials that wild pig hunting would be permitted this summer in Frank Raines Park must have seemed like a fuzzy dream.

But it didn't take them long to react.

All 260 pig hunting permits for Frank Raines Park have already been sold, officials said. The demand for these permits was so great, hunters were lined up out the door at the county parks office in Modesto late last week.

Every Thursday in the Modesto Bee is the Hunting and Fishing section.

I called and there were some openings for the last weekend but I passed thinking it was too pressured. Passes were for Weekends or M-F and cost $10/pass.

The area is only 900 acres and they were letting 20 hunters out there/day. You have to show up in person @ the Stanislaus County parks office (in Modesto) or the park to get a permit. Next year, I'll try out archery there. Could be a decent hog hunt--an old buck or two that may have escaped off the property could be back next season.

Next year the area will be bigger since they have a big chunk of the park closed due to a fire that occured up the canyon.

I used to have access on a 4000 acre ranch half way up the canyon but the lessee I had permission from lost the hunting rights shortly after the property went up for sale. I took Speckmisser out there for a squirrel shoot a couple years ago. We saw a nice 3 pt. The hog hunting was good down lower Nov - April but the pigs do go up the canyon when it gets hot--to the parks area.

I should add that their plan is to open the area for pig/deer concurrent with the A zone archery/rifle deer seasons.

Hey Bill,

If you hear anything again, and wanna partner up, I'd definitely be up for it! Sounds like a good hunt, and it's fairly close. Be glad to go archery too.

From what I have heard this is the first time they have opened the park for pig hunting and it took 5 years for them to finally ok it. I hope they open it again next year. I finally heard of the hunt 2 days after they posted it and I was too late. I'll be ready next time
