Bunch of BS. Total waste of state funds. Anyone else get the feeling this is simply another wedge in the crack to ban/limit hunting in CA? To me, the term "game" implies taking of game animals whereas the term "wildlife" implies living animals. Pretty soon well see the agency's charter change.
Useless trivia as I plan the weekend: Since I started as antelope/wild pig/wildlife telemetry coord in 1988; then deer habitat staff; now wildlife chief, we had within DFG:
2006-2011- RMPD or Wildlife and Inland Fisheries Division- Wildlife Branch (WLB): Created new hierarchy to elevate game programs comparable to the other environmental programs in DFG:
Game Conservation Program with an overall program manager-1
Waterfowl program-2
Upland Game program-3or4 (took the supervisor position to make the program mgr position)
Bear/wild pig/mt lion-1
Deer Program-5
2012-Wildlife and Fisheries Division, Wildlife Branch-Game Conservation Program with an overall program manager-1
Waterfowl program-2
Upland Game program-3or4
Big Game Program (established because of COHA sponsored legislation creating the Big Game Acct):
Includes Bear/wild pig/mt lion, Deer, Desert bighorn sheep, Elk/Antelope Program- 8
Each of the programs and staff may have 1 to a few seasonal assistants or retired DFGers on staff to assist either in HQ or around the state. These positions do not include the regional field staff in each of the 6 regions that also work on game, nongame, and DFG lands. Regional staff report to the regions and through the regional manager.
Overall:
Wildlife Management Division had these 3 areas: Game, Nongame, and Wildlife Investigations Lab (WIL)
Wildlife Programs Branch had these 2 areas: Game and WIL
Wildlife Branch (after 2006 reorg) had these 4 areas: Game, Nongame, DFG Lands, and WIL
So, in the old WMD days, the chief of wildlife focused primarily on Game, and also Nongame in terms of time spent
In the WPB days, the chief focused primarily on Game (The WIL was/is largely a service team that implements and supports branch priorities)
In the WLB days, the chief focused primarily on Game, Nongame, and Lands. Establishing the Game Program Mgr was important to elevate the importance of that role in DFG.
2013: We now have 1 vacancy for waterfowl, 1 vacancy for the Game Program Manager, recently (within past 2 years) filled 2 upland game positions, added a SHARE position. Overall, I think we have added 1 or 2 positions since 2006. We have some tinkering to do still -- we need to identify a regulation specialist, need to address the depredation lion/bear work load and perhaps move that out of game program where it has historically been, need to figure out how biologists/scientists can more effectively deal with the adminstrivia they've been handed (i.e., need more administrative support), and figure out how better to anticipate and be ready for future challenges/issues.
So, as it relates to name change-- My opinion was no worries. Most of the game conservation states you guys think have their act together are "wildlife" agencies. We've been the "wildlife" division/branch for decades. We've had the Game programs in it.
We are implementing traditional Wildlife Management techniques, following the "North American Model of Wildlife Conservation" (Google it-- there is a neat video CD on it out there). We still do. Game are part of wildlife and always have been-- Eric
