I'm considering the purchase of a digital SLR camera sometime this year. I would like to start taking good photos of wildlife. My wife and I have been buying wildlife photos for our home for the last few years and I started thinking it would be great if I could learn to take some nice photos.

Can someone point me in the right direction for doing some research on the right equipment I might need? Thanks.

Curly, I've got a Pentax digital SLR type camera, the *ist D, and am delighted with it. The lenses from my regular SLR Pentax are interchangeable with it. The formatting of the digital is about 1 1/2 times that of the SLR so my 80-320 mm lens essentially becomes a 120-480. I also got a little closeup lens with it and can take pictures of postage stamp size areas.

Here's the Pentax web site; hope it's got some good info for you.

Check out http://www.dpreview.com , It has reviews on all of the current digital SLR's as well as digital SLR forums for the different manufacturers. It is a very informitive site and should help you out.

I second the dpreview.com - there are also excellent talk forums there for all things digital photography related. Click on the forums on the left hand side. BTW - I just purchased a Canon Digital Rebel and a Sigman 70-200 f2.8 lens. I'm really liking it so far. The new Nikon is just now hitting the streets I believe however it is a little more expensive than the Digital Rebel.

Since you are going to take nature photos, be sure to check out the following sites:

http://www.naturephotographers.net

and

http://www.naturescapes.net

You will find no better wildlife photographers on the net.
