Howell Island is where I used to skip school and hang out with buddies fishing or huntin. Back then it was private land and we used a boat to get out there. Them low water dams can flip a small boat real quick. A canoe makes it even more difficult. It happens almost ever year out there. A lifejacket would probably have saved the guys life IF HE HAD BEEN WEARIN ONE.

It's not lookin good. You don't want to go in the Muddy MO in the spring, all kinds of huge trees and debris comin down from upriver this time of year due to the heavy rains up north.

The pic in this article shows the low water bridge at Howell Island, just a bit NW of St. Louis. We called it MO Bottom since that was the name of the road that went out that way to the river.
