I am heading West this fall, late summer to hunt elk in WMU #33 in Colorado, and wondered if anyone had hunted that area with a bow before??? Seeking any advice that could be offered, may even be interested in linking up with a couple of other guys pending what my other members of my group are doing since 2 or 3 of the guys who were planning to go are starting to drag their feet a bit. Any advice, info would be highly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I'll be up in Rifle a couple times this summer (fishin') and in September (Grouse Huntin') and I can let you know what I see or hear.

Hey maybe my dog and shotgun will spook the Bull you've been stalking for hours (just kidding...that would suck).

Maybe I can come by your camp and say howdy to you if were in the area at the same time

try contacting "Tim's Tools" store in Rifle for leads on coolers and butchers, they are a pretty good resource for taxidermists also; we called them on our cell phones from up on the mountain late in the dark for the home phone of a taxidermist a couple years back and the guy waited up for us to take our elk cape in to him. Have not been back to CO in the years since the non-res fee went up, but the Rifle store of Tim's Tools phone was (303) 625-1849.

Thanks for the replies guys!!

Intimidator,
I've chatted with Jeff a couple of times, and pretty much decided that I can leg work it out I think, I am not really looking for a 350-class bull as much as going for the hunt, and the opportunity to camp in the mountains and enjoy a week of hard hunting and peacefulness. When I get ready to go for the Big Bull, I will then use Jeff as a resource.

Jackrabbbit,
Thanks alot, number will get dialed in the A.M. to see what info they can give me.

COhunter,
Thanks for the info and advice, much appreciated.

Even if I only come out with nothing, I will be elated to get out and enjoy nature and the hunt this fall, but it sure would be nice to fill the freezer!!!!

Man, I almost choked, that area went from 130 archery elk kills to 20 in one year, but I found a silver lining in that a tag will also gain access to 23 & 24, both yielding over 100 archery elk last year.

I thought maybe there'd been a horrible forest fire, and there weren't any trees left. The planning continues as app's date come closer. Can't wait to go. Anybody know much about the southern halves of 23 and 24???

I used to hunt 23 all the time archery. I would average about 1 opp a year, being it a shot at a cow or bull but mostly cows. Lots of elk on the private land but if you hunt hard you will find them just get away from everyone else thats what I had to do.

Don't write it off. It might go back up this year. Don't read to much into the kill stats. An area that sucked last year may just mean there are more bulls this year. Look closely at the rifle stats too. Something happened. Try to figure out what it was and go from there. We hunt an area where there was always a good kill. One year there were a few thousand sheep pastured there and the kill was way down, next year was our best ever.
