Hey guys, I was wondering if pigs are good swimmers.. I've been looking for a group of pigs that I saw on an island.. I guess they might have got stuck there when the lake filled up. but I've been out there on a boat combing the entire area and have not seen them yet. I figure they must have swam out because it's only about 50 yards to shore but deep. What are your thoughts????

Someone posted a picture last year (or the year before) of a pig doing the pig paddle at Lake Sonoma.

I was not there, but my brother saw one swimming in a Sacramento area slough a couple years ago. He said it was motoring along pretty well.

Yup they do swim good. Here is a picture from a post in June 17,2004 titled "San Luis Reservoir".
[attachment=28949:attachment]
The guy went alongside the swimming hog with his boat and took the picture.
There is also a post on April 14, 2005 titled "Hey here's a "what would you do". It is about 2 guys fishing in a lake and went to investigate some dogs and a hog swimming and chasing in the lake. They caught the hog and lifted on board the 3 dogs in the water that were exhausted and gave the hog alive to the dog owner which turned out to be an acquaintance.
Just use the search function here in this JHO website at the top of the main page, type in the word "swimming", choose the "most recent post" button and choose the "hog and javelina" forum and the page will pop up and then scroll down on the page to see the posts and pictures.
'Nuff said.

In my 'ol country, there were true stories of boats loaded with predominantly Muslims being swamped and overturned when the vessel encounters swimming wild pigs in the open seas. To the Muslims, pigs are devil possesed and the passengers may just have panicked.

Several years back when I lived on the "Big Island" of Hawaii it was in the paper some guys were fishing about a mile offshore IN THE OPEN OCEAN when this wild boar swam by (mystery where it came from) and tried to get on board. After the crew preventing this from happening the pig swam back into shore coming up along the Ali'i drive seawall preventing it from getting on dry land, a passing Paniolo (Hawaiian Cowboy) roped and hog-tied the pig and drove off with it in the back of his truck most likely for a future Lu'au. They swim very well.

Yeah, my uncle took that picture. We were fishing in Portugese Cove when a small group of hogs came out of the water. We seen this sow about half across when we came along side to investigate.

Animals do swim. I have seen lots of documentary films on the Discovery channel where they showed herds of Caribou swimming and making it across fast flowing rivers in the frigid North and there was also a program in the Discovery channel about Asian elephants swimming to and from an Island. The cameraman even went underwater with his camera filming the swimming elephant above him while he was underwater. I believe from memory that the distance of the island to the mainland was around 6 miles and the elephants occasionally would swim across. Amazing film really. As I remember the animals also were swimming at a good clip. 'Nuff said.

Hogs will often seek refuge from pursuing dogs in bodies of water. Most of the time, they will back up to the water to protect their backside from the dogs, but in some cases, they will take to the water.

I remember this one time when my dogs were swimming after a hog in a stock tank. Let me tell you...that hog moved around quite well in the water!

Coons are well know to draw a hound out in water and then drown them.

This is The North Fork of Cottonwood Creek, the pig i took last may swam it just before i took him.Also after my hunting partner took his pig out of a herd of 13 pigs ,2 of the herds boars swam the creek faster than i thought possible. Yes they can swim and quite well.

I was watching the crocodile hunter on the animal planet once...they were driving through the scrub with his dog sitting in his lap. It looked like a small queensland mix or something. The dog jumped out of his lap, bayed up a large hog into some bushes, Steve tried to grab it and it bolted into a pond. Steve went swimming after it and dragged it to shore with his dog. Was the best croc hunter I've ever seen. Even better than the time his dog bays up goats. He ends up flipping and wheelbarrowing the hog on the shore.
