Hey, I read alot about Carrizo but never been there. I want head out for some rabbit and just scout around, but Ive been told that a 4x4 is a must for Soda Lake Rd. Has anyone ever been stuck there? Also is night huntin allowed for yotes? thanks

I was at Carrizo yesterday and never came close to needing 4x4. There's mud puddles on the side roads, but Soda Lake Rd. was dry and dusty. Just be careful during and right after a good rain. As far as night hunting I've heard two stories about it being legal. Check the DFG handbook to make sure.

I spoke to Warden Rick Fisher and he said it was legal to hunt yotes at night.

I think night hunting for song dogs is shotgun only and there's a shot size restriction, I'd check the regs before heading out with your spotlight!

BTW, Carrizo is a great area for coyote hunting, especially throughout the bulk of the Caliente range. Although, I would recommend setting up and calling closer to the valley floor or the South side of the range along Hwy 166.

As far as the pigs are concerned they are certainly in the neighborhood, but it's just a matter of getting lucky and catching the hogs on the public ground. I've seen pigs in the area but they always seem to be on the wrong side of the fence.

You don't need a four-by if you are just cruising around on Soda Lake Road. I was there today. Called and killed one coyote and saw a herd of Antelope.
