Dog Saves Edgefield SC Man from Wild Hog Attack

by Clint Bowie, Edgefield Advertiser

August 18, 2004

An Edgefield man was hospitalized recently after being attacked by a wild hog at his home on Gaston Road. The hog, which eyewitnesses estimated to weigh upwards of 700 pounds, materialized in Fab Burt’s backyard while he was working in his garden.

“It came out of nowhere and attacked me,” said Burt. “It had me pinned on the ground and was mauling me.”

Fortunately, Burt’s seven-month-old German shepherd, named Bobo, was on hand to help him fend off the hog. “He saved my life,” said Burt.

The hog attack comes on the heels of the widespread reports of “Hogzilla,” a 1000-pound wild hog that was killed in Georgia and subsequently gained nationwide notoriety as the largest hog ever killed in the wild.

According to Dr. Jack Mayer, a wildlife ecologist who has been studying wild pigs for the past thirty years, county residents shouldn’t be fearful of similar incidents occurring to them. “This type of incident does happen from time to time, but it’s not the sort of thing that, if you happen to be in the woods, I would worry about.”

Beech Island, he said, and other hamlets along the Savannah River have notable wild pig problems, but Edgefield’s feral hog population is nothing significant.
Seven-hundred-pounders, however, are significant. “Wild pigs,” said Dr. Mayer, “can reach 500 pounds, but anything more than that is extremely rare.”

County residents’ fears can be assuaged in knowing that the Edgefield hog responsible for the recent attack was put to death in the days following the incident.

In the Philippines, the native wild boar(average size is 100 lbs.) are not as big as the European or Russian boar but are very swift on their feet. A long time ago, back in the early 50's the southern island(Mindanao) was still largely triple canopy tropical rainforest. The early settlers had volunteer village guards that were provided M1(30-06) rifles by the gov't. One exceptionally large wild boar(80 kilos or 176 lbs.) was shot in the shoulder by one of these guards with his M1 with military ammo. The shot broke the right shoulder but the boar managed to charge & slash the shooter in his right hip. Another time, a wild boar was bayed by a pack of dogs & when the hunting group approached the boar made a dash straight into one of the hunters & with a leap slashed one of the guys in the stomach. I am just glad that most of the time the boars are running away from us & not towards us. larrysogla.

Hey larrysogla, those Philippine wild boar, though undersized compared to Russian boars are mean as hell. One time in the 70's, me end my Dad were part of a hunting party doing a combo deer/boar drive. All of a sudden we heard one of the dog handlers screaming for help about a hundred hard upwind of us. When we reached the guy, we saw a 150 pounder boar with a 4-inch tusk that's standing on top of the handler trying to gore him. What stopping the boar from finishing him off was his 50 lbs. mixed breed nunting dog with jaws clamped on the boars nuts and desperately pulling the boar away from his master long enough for the rest of the hunting party to come to his aid. The boar was finished off with a shotgun by one of the hunters. As it turned out, the dog was wounded also during the ordeal with a huge gash in the abdominal area. I guess as those boars get bigger, the less they follow protocol. Instead of running towards the guns after being chased by the dogs, he turned and attacked one of the dogs and his handler instead. The dog survived his wounds by the way.

At my friends ranch in Houston, his Pastor hit a 400 lb. wild boar in the shoulder with a 12 gauge slug at 15 yds. from up in a tree stand & the hog dashed for 100 yds. like greased lightning. 400 lbs. of angry muscle hustling at 30 mph is taking fun on the wild, wild side. It is scary if it is boring towards me. larrysogla.
