Dozens of elk killed in trap melee.
1/30/02
BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- As many as 60 elk died Tuesday during a trapping operation at Weiser Cove, Idaho Department of Fish and Game biologists reported.
Agency crews started the trapping Saturday as a final resort to remove elk prompting damage complaints in the Weiser River valley.
About 200 head of elk flooded into the trap around noon Tuesday. Crews realized too many had gone into the trap and they successfully released 32 but about 60 animals -- mostly yearlings and calves -- were killed in the panic.
The dead elk were immediately field-dressed while mobile butcher units were called. The carcasses will be donated to needy families.
Workers removed 132 animals during the operation and shipped them to remote areas of Hells Canyon.
The herds were not trimmed sufficiently by hunters, even with a five-month hunting season last fall.
