I did a drop camp over 10 years ago. it can be good but these are the downsides.

you are stuck in one spot, if it is for elk they are either there or they are not. you are taking a big chance hoping they are in the area. they can clear out quickly and sometimes weather is neccesary to get them out there.

The outfitter that puts you in your location will not put you in his best spot. he save that for his full service clients.

it comes down to your expectations. my thoughts are if you are gonna spend the vacation time and $ pay a little extra and go fully outfitted or start getting preference points and draw a great unit you can do yourself.

so cal hunter,

I've done a number of drop camps for elk and deer and a couple of guided hunts.

While the guided hunts have been "easier", I've had better luck on game on the drop camps. If you in an area with game, and you can hunt, you will get an animal. If there is no game in the area, it does not matter if you are doing a drop or a guided hunt, you won't get an animal.

Personally, I really have doubts about going on another guided hunt. The $4,000+ I spent last year in Wyoming would keep me in drop camps or self-guided hunts for several years.
