Sunday I cruised the hedge row and wood line in my best spot on snowshoes. I didn't push into the beddig areas back in the timber at all because I feel it's still a bit early. I did pick up a side off a young 8 point that was mostly under the snow in the edge of one of the many beds on the sout facing side of the hedgerow. It looked like it had been shed prior to that big snowfall that came up through the midwest and hit the east coast a couple weeks ago...which is early.

I left work early today for a dentist appointment. It had warmed up for several days running here in central NY and had been raining lightly since last night so the snow had dropped ---perfect conditions for exposing sheds that had fallen in the snow. I had my boots in the car. I retraced the same area and when I got to the beds where I'd found the one side I stood there looking closely at the beds and just looking for any small part of the other side. Unbelievably, it took a moment or two but damned if the other side wasn't just showing a little, about 5 feet from where the first one was. Yeee haw.....not a big set but a nice little reward for some early searching.

I don't usually find both halves of small sets, more commonly the larger ones. Also, our herd seems to shed more towards mid-late February on the average, so this seemed early to me, especially for a young buck. His tines are short-ish but 13" beams---will be a nice 2.5 yr old this fall. Still a lot of snow and a lot of woods to search in the bedding areas later this month.

Good luck all.
