I had the pleasure of having another great father/son team here for a hunt last week...the hunt was spectacular, the company even better.
Off we go at the crack of o-dark-thirty (standard for this time of year). Before first light- we get to the top of the hill across the road from the barley fields. Sure enough- there are hogs right there in the bottom of the field. We pile in the pick-up, dashing over to put the "super stalk" on them. Race around into the field and hike to the top of the barley. Now all of the sudden the spotter is not quite sure (me in this case). It's still dark at this point. Almost starting to get light. Everything comes to a screeching halt. Gee - those hogs look really large. Then it starts to get a little lighter- dang they have really long tails and don't seem to be moving at all like hogs do. Definite "spot and stumble"... they would be, of course, cows.
Then we manage to disturb some of the other cows in the upper part of the barley- so now we've got cows running wildly down through where the pigs should be. Not good. More "spot and stumble". After glassing running cattle and blank pig spots for a few minutes, it's finally getting light enough to see over into a canyon a couple of miles away.
Bingo- There are at least 30 hogs in an open canyon. Pile back in the pick-up and drive really fast. The chase is on. We get as close as we possible can - then it's a footrace to the hogs. Slip up over the top of the horizon ever so gently.
Matt picks out a really nice sow and with a single shot , slam -dunks her. But she gets up anyway. Off we all go, into a really nice steep canyon, full of the thickest Bryson brush we've got here.
But Matt's first shot was lethal, down she goes about 400 yards from where she was originally shot at- excellent way to start his hoggin career.
Thanks you guys for coming- congratulations on your first hog Matt- I had a great time with you and your dad. . . Thanks for all the shooting instructions too. We're all still smiling!
