I just use the foam expandable 2 reasons. One is I can get handfuls from work being in the construction trade and two, the bigger ear muff type get in my way when I am shooting my guns. I cant get down on my stalk like I would while I am hunting. I can still talk at a reasonable level and I feel it is enough protection for my ears, they are kinda shot already.

I also use foam. Cheaper, doesn't get in the way, and easy to bring enough for friends. Technically, they're a little bit better than many over-the-ear muffs, at least based on the dB blocking effectiveness level printed on the respective packages. For example, if you compare these muffs: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Howard-Leight-Impact8482-Sport-Earmuff/708113.uts?No=0&destination=/category/Hearing-Protection-Enhancement/104381280.uts

And these earplugs: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Radians174-Ear-Plugs/742214.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=/catalog/search.cmd?recordsPerPage=18&No=0&N=0&Ntk=AllProducts&Ntt=Ear+plugs&search=Search&No=0&Ntt=Ear+plugs , the earplugs have a whole 10dB more blocking power. Sound intensity doubles for every 3 dB, so a 10dB difference is pretty significant.

Good points.

Should have mentioned for range use primarily.
