Andy, everyone of us envies you! Awesome tale! Wasn't it a shock at how big that cow elk was? I saw one 60 yds away at FHL this year and I thought I was seeing a dinosaur.
Yes, Tony. When I saw the first bull elk hanging in camp on opening day, it was an “eye opener” – that animal was like a horse with horns. Fortunately the Admiral and I decided I should get a cow tag but even then, the size of those Rocky Mtn. Elk cows was remarkable. I’d seen a fair number of Tule Elk over the past several years but these RME were clearly a size larger. The decision to have the butcher in Rifle bone it out so I had only to bring home the large pieces of vacuum packed meat was made casually but I was ever so glad I did – I would not look forward to processing 4 elk quarters at home after driving back from Colorado.
