Hi All, First post to this list and I'm already asking for advice! I drew an Archery Only Either Sex Tag for FHL and can use any info or advice that you guys could offer. I've never hunted Elk before but I am an avid Deer hunter ( CA, NM, TX, AZ ). For those that have hunted the base, do you have any sugestions on what areas I should concentrate on? I'm going to go over this weekend to do some deer hunting so that I can do a little pre scouting. Some of my buddies that have trained there have said that the Elk aren't very spooky, they had to chase them off the firing range. Is shot placement about the same? Thanks in advance for any information.

P.S. It was a military tag that I drew.

Sorry I can't help with specifics on the base, I have only hunted there twice and was restricted to only a couple of zones. If you look around this category you will see a couple of other threads about FHL. Sounds like the manditory meeting with the folks there is where they give you lots of info on exactly where the critters are concentrated at that time.

Basically the same spot for shot placemet. Since the shoulder bones are larger and stronger try and get in behind without hitting it.

Welcome to the site, it's a great place for info. A search for FHL in the elk forum should turn up enough reading to keep you going

Thanks for the info BDB. I'm going to head over on Friday for early registration and do a little black tail hunting on Saturday. I'm hoping I'll be able to find the Elk and do some pre-scouting for my hunt. Any other info that you or anybody else has is greatly appreciated.

Hi Flyboy Bowhunter,

I've hunted FHL extensively for upland game for quite a while. As BDB pointed out FHL usually runs a mandatory meeting for the few elk hunters lucky enough to draw a tag. They'll fill you in on the hunt details and I'm not certain but I believe you'll have exclusive access to several zones. (I vaguely recall a few zones closed for elk hunter access only this past season while quail hunting).

From my experience I'd focus your scouting and hunting in the southern zones, specifically the areas that border the restricted artillery range located several miles south of the check in area. Unit 25 borders this range to the south east. I usually see elk on the range and have seen them in unit 25 headed toward the range. You may wanna try unit 27 too. I've hunted most of the zones west of 25 & 27 and have yet to see elk in them.

There are some nice elk down there. Good luck and let us know how you do.

During the Elk hunts, you will have exclusive access. No one else can be in the area. Not even fisherman. The orientation will cover this. You will have about 8 zones to yourself. Most of the big herds were in 12B zone. That was two years ago during my Cow hunt. It will probably be the same. They also like to hang out in the closed zones (cantonment areas (sp?)). If you are sure you wjacked em, make sure you give them plenty of time to go down, they are hardy. They will emphasize this during orientation. I know of one hunter that shot two cows because he thought he missed the first one. He turned himself in and the warden down there promptly locked him up. Not sure how it turned out. He had his son with him.

During our cow hunt, we kept running into bulls.

Get high and glass...thats how we gor ours. You can read about the hunt here:

Just back from my scouting trip at FHL and man am I excited! My budy and I drove over Fri Night and spotted a herd of about 30 Tule Elk just on the West side of Priest Valley. These were the first Elk that either one of us had ever seen outside of a zoo (lol) and we were both pretty impressed. This herd had a HUGE bull pushing it. We hadn't even made it to FHL yet and I was already dreaming about opening day! On FHL we spotted a herd Friday night that we really couldn't get close enough too to check out, not even sure what zone they were in. This morning we went to TA 25 and the Elk were bugeling while we were at the entrance gate! We found 1 herd in 25 that had about 13-14 cows and a decent looking bull running them. We also saw lots of sign in the area back by the resevoir (spl?). My friend jumped a Bobcat back in there as well. Thanks to all of you for the tips and I'll make sure to take and post as many pictures as possible of my Elk hunt in September.

Flyboy, If you tag a bull I very much would like to help you get him in the CBH record book. I am in charge of contacting the successful Ca elk bowhunters and will keep tuned in to how your hunt turns out. Good luck to you and I hope you hang that coveted tag on a big bull. Ed F

Fly Boy:
I hunted for pig on several occasion in FHL and always saw elk in 25. If you follow the paved road all the way to river then turn left just before the river there will be a large dirt road that will take you all the way to the other end of the unit. However, not long after turning onto the dirt road there will be a road that will take off to your left and hed into the center of 25. You can't mistake it because there is a small bridge there and that road to the left splits like a river delta climbing the sides of the small valley and one main road that follows the center for the entire length. My suggestion is to turn from that main dirt road onto the other heading for the small bridge, but right before the bridge hang a right, follow the sheep trail through the reeds and climb up on top of the ridge. Park there, and if you have two people in your party, have one observe the draw on the right and one on the left. I have seen monster bulls every time on the right, and always see cows on the left of that ridge. Anyways continue to walk up hill following that ridge for probably half a mile and then let your hunting skills take over. My thoughts is you should have an elk within 10 min of dismounting your vehicle if you follow these directions. On the map you get at the Check station, the main valley Im talking about has a small stream drawn in, and it runs directly though 25 North to South, and if you still don't know where it is ask the people at the desk where the spring in 25 is. But don't expect to find elk at that spring. They have a hevilly used crossing point for that valley, and it's about 300 yds north of the sprind, which is in the middle of that valley. They'll be under trees hardly moving when they are alone, and if you see them in a heard they'll probably be moving fast. If you wistle at a moving heard, many will stop and stare at you. This could be the difference between you getting an elk and not. I tell you don't be afraid to whistle if they aren't stopping. -Cause once they move over the ridge you may not see them again all day.

Good luck.
