My buddy has a cabin out in colorado near colorado springs and he said that i could use it with a couple of my buddies this fall to hunt. I know it is getting late for me to plan a trip, but i was wondering if this area has over the counter elk or mule deer tags. What part of the state if any has this (over the counter). I will hunt bow or rifle so if that changes anything I will pick the one that is needed to get the tags. THanks for your help.

Well Siggs, if you haven't decided on where to go, and wanted to apply for a tag, you might be out of luck as the applications had to be in (postmarked by April 4th I believe).

Not to worry though. If you didn't put in for the draw in time, there will no doubt be a crapload of leftover tags for archery, blackpowder and some of the rifle seasons or buy on over the counter bull tag (depending on how far you want to venture from your buddy's place). Deer tags are by draw only however I'm sure there will be some leftovers as well. Where abouts is your buddy's cabin at? There is a bunch of national forest just west, north and south of C Springs, but you don't want to be spending alot of time on the road traveling to and from your hunting area. The Pike Nat'l forest is close to the Springs, but it is usually overrun with weekend campers. Get your maps out and ask as many questions as you can. Someone is sure to jump in and direct you to a reasonably good area. Good Luck...........

I could probably help you out a little if you know where the cabin is at? Near Colorado Springs could mean alot of different places and game units.

Siggs,
All Mule deer tags are Draw only, and cost about $300, the elk tags for that are also draw only, unless hunting with a bow. Try the CDNR website: http://wildlife.state.co.us/hunt/BigGame/ it should be helpful, but you really need to know where the cabin is. Plus, you can put your application in online as long as it is in before midnight tonight. The success rate is only about 15% for most units near there, with one unit, 58 being exceptionally high at 38% though it is a draw only unit, the others are unlimited, meaning if you put in the application, you get the tag. Kind of late planning, but you could feasibly do it, but you have only 14hrs. to plan, and the clock is ticking!!!! Good Luck, and if you don't go this year, there is always next, and a little extra planning might make your trip a more successful venture.

Actually most of the units around C springs are general areas where you can buy a bull tag over the counter for the combined rifle seasons. Figure out which unit the cabin is in then go from there.

Archery 033, giving openings to 33 and the southern halves of 23 and 24. Anybody hunted there??? O12 as a second, though I know that will never happen, my standby will be an OTC tag and head into 42 or 421 should have some potential.

RedNeck,

I've predominately hunted in unit 12 over the past 20 years with mixed success. Sometimes we et into them and sometimes we don't. One thing for sure, once the 2nd combined rifle season gets into play, the elk are pretty much buggered from the 3 previous seasons. Beautiful area........

Elk,
I'd heard 12 was PRIMO for Archery, but I was looking at pure numbers, I think one of my group should come back with something, be it a bull or a cow. 4 Guys, 8 Days, has got to render something in the early Archery Season. Man these calls are tough though, are any certain mouth calls easier to master????

What about Idaho? I have another buddy that has guided out there, but I have not gotten in touch with him for a couple of weeks. Is mule and elk tags draw there too?

Siggs,

The draw applications had to be in by April 5th. If you wanted to hunt in a specific unit and had to draw for tags, yes you MAY be too late. The leftover licenses (from the drawing) list will be available after the drawings are completed and go on sale during the summer. It does sound confusing ot maybe I'm just confusing you! There will be a boatload of leftover tags available, so you very well might be OK.

Not to add insult to injury, but the leftover drawing (if I understand it correctly) is available only to those who put in for the first draw.

It's not to late for parts of Idaho elk--first come, first serve until the tags for various regions sell out. Not sure when the Idaho controlled hunt deadline is. Not sure when Montana's draw deadline is but there are guaranteed combo rifle tags there if you book via an outfitter service.

The Idaho controlled hunt application period is May 1 thru 31. The 2005 regs should be available any day now. Word is there are some changes this year in the general mule deer hunt.

Montana's deadline was March 15. I'm pretty sure the Guaranteed Outfitter Elk combo tags are only for archery.

Some units in CO, such as the one i'm hunting (15) this year, are OTC rifle bull tags

Your not to late to elk hunt in Colorado. You can still buy an over the counter bull tag for most of the units that are around the Colorado Springs area. You missed the limited draw, but you can still buy a license over the counter when you get to Colorado. If your still confused call the Colorado Division of Wildlife at 719-227-5200 or check it out on line.
