I live in Southern California and have a good friend whose family owns 650 acres just outside of Hayden CO.. The land is approximately 11 miles south of Yampa Valley Airport in Hayden. It must have elk as a guide takes clients out hunting on the land. My friends family has given me the OK to hunt it next elk season. Right now I only bowhunt.

My question to any of you who know the area. Do you think it is worth a shot? Or is this not a good area and I should look to hunt public land somewhere else. I have never hunted elk before. So any advise or help would be GREATLY appreciated. I know the #1 answer will be to hire a guide. But I cannot afford one. So it's DIY for me!

I'm also big into flyfishing. So any recommendations on that in the area would be appreciated too.

Please feel free to email me at joe.schwatka@navy.mil

Take care!

That area is prime elk country, and has excellent deer numbers too. Good luck.

GMU 13 I think and it is heavy winter population. I would say late season hunts would be real exciting there. Private Property can be a blessing and a curse. Near my sweetspot the private land is heavy deer and moose but I did not see heavy elk sign. I find it best to walk the region and scope it out. Lots of bino/spotting scope time. Game cameras would also be helpful. The trails are easy to spot with sometimes several hundred walking by. Even some areas I know with dozens walking thru the trails were well worn. If you need help and want some company I may be able to swing a trip up. I would venture a guess sheds would be more so up there too? Great luck and do not waste the opportunity. Hunting is also about the prep work and all the fun looking off season. Only killers go out and shoot the first thing they see with no prep time.
