there are several small wildfires burning near and around my intended hunt area. season opens up in a month and im wanting to know what kind of affect will the fires have on the elk's movement. particularly will they pick up and leave the country or will they just move far enough away to stay safe? right now the total acres burned is less than a 100 but that could change. any thoughts or experiences on this would be helpful.

All of my hunting areas are on fire this year, both my SO CAL area and my Colorado area.  THe COlorado area is much worse because the EXACT location is scorched and I almost lost the cabin.  On the plus side I saw tender new growth already coming up in the SO CAL area.

From what I've seen here in the local mountains the deer stay if the burn leaves a mosaic with some cover. If the burn is very hot, the burn is almost total and there is no cover close by they only travel through the burn and don't hang out much until the green up happens.

I was reading about the recent Arizona fires and they are saying the same thing about the elk there that will have some cover from the mosaic pattern of the fire.
