I have seen posts that have talked about some great deer educational books, but I was wondering what people thought about the elk educational books and video's out there. So far I have found the elknut book and video's to be the best. There is no hunting in the video's, but it is like sitting in a college elk hunting course. A couple of hunting video's that I picked up some good tips were "Full of Bull 3" and "Hot Bulls 3". Anyone have any other suggestions about books or video's that they found very useful in the way they hunt elk?

slayer,

most books and vids out there are all good and they all teach just about the same. but the best books and vids for me, personally, is sitting in the parking lots of Jewell's Wildlife Meadows and just watch the herds do their thing. I'll bring out my calls and do my best to mimic their sounds. I personally believe, that is the best teacher out there. Stick with them until they start to head back up to bed, and that's when you'll learn how a bull rounds up his herd and what vocals he makes.

Jewell Meadows. Every year hopeful and eager hunters surround the wildlife area with the intent of bagging a record book elk. Then the day before the season starts ODFW goes through the same surrounding areas and uses noise makers and aircraft to scoot the elk onto the refuge. Some of the elk manage to get through several years of this and attain massive antlers and body size, only to be shot from the road and left out in the meadow.

Elkbow is right6 though, nothing like sitting in and watching the real thing. The refuge off the lower Umpqua River is a good place to go as well.

i attended an elk seminar from a primos dude. it was held at a sportsman warehouse. the guy also has a great video, on how to set up an ambush with friends and calling. he used a montana decoy. the one of the elk cow butt. deadly stuff. the guy is ralph ramos. it worked wonders two days in a row two years ago.

i think he is a PSE prostaff guy also. modern hunting shows are more about sponsors and the kill. no education left in them.

I'm a fan of primos. I have the whole collection of vids on elk hunting. One of my favorite is the ol' Jim Horn. If you can get his CD's you should. When it comes to calling or hunting elk, no one knows it better then Mr. Horn.
