Great write up. Sounds like I will have my work cut out for me during the bull hunt. I had better practice wind sprints

Your best bet is to get in front of them without being seen and let them come to you. There is no way a running man can outrun a walking elk. I tried and lost.

Great story. I was up there this weekend and saw the 2 cows hanging at the check station. Very nice elk.

Great story. I was up there this weekend and saw the 2 cows hanging at the check station. Very nice elk.

It was frustrating in the sense that the base had specific no hunting zones, specific weapons zones and questionable maps. Factor in 16 hunters all trying to get their elk out of the same herd and it was chaos.

I don't fault the other hunters one bit. I had more than one of my stalks busted by someone and I know I busted at least one of someone else's by accident. The elk just weren't in the areas the biologist expected.

When I turned in my paperwork, there 6 out of 16 elk taken on day 4. The game guys told me that in the Oct hunt, they had that many on the first day. 'course, they weren't in winter herds then.

Thanks, I worked my butt off for that elk. Tastes great!

Thanks for the story. I've been applying to FHL for the hunt you were successful on for 5 years without success. Based on your story I should consider another hunt and/or apply for an earlier season hunt.

I'd go on the Oct hunt if I had to do it again. Shotgun was NOT my first choice. I'd have prefered my 30-06 for a cleaner kill and some stand-off range.

I'll apply again when they let me, in 2011, and in the off years somewhere else.

Don't give up, play the odds. I analyzed the number of folks that applied and chose the hunt with the least applicants and it turned out it was over turkey day.

Don't be a stranger here. I'll see you again at VAFB. Hell, I may tap you pig hunt advice. Those dang things have got me baffled.
