I am looking for a horseback, wilderness, elk hunt for the fall of 08. Most any western state/Province is ok with me. I do not want a Ranch hunt using 4 whelers or P/u's. Any duration over 7 days ok. I have a bit of experience hunting big game and although i will be 68 in 08 i am in pretty good shape.
any outfitter leads appreciated--
PM or email me at- rpnestor@centurytel.net

Your trophy potential is going to be a lot higher if you purchased a landown tag through an outfitter in NM for one of the Gila National Forest Wilderness areas. You will pay a lot of money.

I think you'd have a much, much higher odds of success not to mention lower travel costs if you went with an outfitter in CO if monetary considerations play the largest role in your decision although bull size could be smaller on average.

I think Montana might be your best bet overall for both a trophy and high elk numbers because if you apply via an outfitter you are guaranteed a tag in good wilderness areas. I'd hunt the Bob Marshall Wilderness area. The Absarokas would be another good choice. You'd have to survey the outfitters to find a good fit. I think outfitters are like shoes...if they have good references/are reputable, it's a matter of finding one that you like and fits your hunting style.

But, the Hells Canyon or Eagle Cap area might be pretty darned awesome too but it could be a much harder hunt than other choices. Landowner tags in Walla Walla or Weneha in OR will cost more than they are worth imo compared to NM landowner tags.

Widux-

Are you out for a trophy hunt, say 350 + or just the adventure with a great chance of killing a 6X6 in a rugged setting. I guess it all depends on what you are looking for.
