Fall Seeding of Wildfire-Burned Lands Starting to Pay Off

ROSEBURG – Last fall’s planting of wildlife forage seed on private lands in Southwest Oregon burned by wildfires are beginning to pay off, as this year’s growth appears across the landscape.

"The areas I’ve looked at are growing great," said ODFW habitat biologist Vince Oredson. "We’ve had good growing conditions and the plants are really coming up well."

The 2002 wildfire season saw large swaths of Oregon’s timber and rangelands burned. To help rehabilitate those lands the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Access and Habitat Program earmarked $200,000 to provide seed to plant on private property burned by wildfire.

"The main goals of the seedings were erosion control, preventing noxious weeds from taking over, and to produce forage for wildlife," said Oredson. Yellow star thistle is a noxious weed of particular concern, as it can quickly colonize areas disturbed by wildfire and crowd out plants that provide food for wildlife. To provide the maximum level of benefit, the seedings included a mix of legumes and grasses.

A total of 7,829 acres of private lands throughout Oregon were seeded, with seeds purchased by funds from the Access and Habitat Program. Of the total lands seeded, 367 acres were located in Western Oregon, with the remaining in the eastern part of the state.

Created by the Oregon Legislature in 1993, the A&H Program is funded by a $2 surcharge on hunting licenses. Funds raised by the program are distributed through grants to individual and corporate landowners, conservation organizations, and others for cooperative wildlife habitat improvement and hunter access projects throughout the state.
