Fall turkey tags become hot commodity in Oregon
A move by NWTF Western Regional Biologist Jim Stengle to save a few dollars on his turkey tag turned into a bittersweet discovery recently in Oregon.
Stengle, who was waiting for his six-month residency so he could buy a resident hunting/fishing license and fall turkey tag, recently discovered he will be waiting until spring to harvest a gobbler in Oregon.
“As soon as I had my six months under my belt in mid-October, I bought my resident license and asked for a turkey tag,” Stengle said. “To my surprise, I was told all turkey tags were sold out about two weeks before the season opened. That’s great news for Oregon, but bad news for me.”
Thisnews comes even after Oregon doubled the number of fall turkey tags to 2,000 and expanded the number of counties that are open for fall hunting. The fall turkey hunting season was also extended two weeks.
Despite having to watch the Oregon fall turkey season on the sidelines this year, Stengle is hoping many Oregon hunters share in a bountiful fall harvest.
“This just shows how turkeys and turkey hunters have expanded out here in Oregon,” he said.
