Farm Dedicated to Wildlife Habitat with Help from ODFW Grant
NYSSA – Upland bird habitat on 137-acres of land near Nyssa will be improved using a $5,300 Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Access and Habitat Program grant awarded to property owner Bob Sealby.
Planned improvements include replacing irrigated cropland with wheat, millet, grain and sorghum to provide spring food and winter cover for wildlife, planting trees and shrubs, seeding overgrazed grassland area, and managing riparian areas to reduce erosion.
Access and Habitat Program funds will be used to purchase shrubs, trees, seed, fertilizer, perimeter fence, grated pipe, fuel, and for weed control. Sealby is devoting his entire property to wildlife and wildlife habitat.
The project is expected to increase pheasant and waterfowl populations in an agricultural area with limited wildlife habitat. Sealby will allow public hunting access by permission.
Created by the Oregon Legislature in 1993, the A&H Program is funded by a $2 surcharge on hunting licenses. Funds raised by the program are distributed through grants to individual and corporate landowners, conservation organizations, and others for cooperative wildlife habitat improvement and hunter access projects throughout the state.
