I am heading up to FHL for the first time. this will also be my first time hog hunting. I am new to JHO and would like to introduce myself, My name is Gary 25yrs old and live in So. Cal (Rancho Cucamonga) about a mile away from the new Bass Pro Shop. I am in need of some advice from you long time hog hunters. I am staying at the camp ground on base and have no clue on where abouts to go and what are the best methods for the fort. I know going on a public land hunt for your first time is a little much but hey I just want to get my feet wet and gain some experience and have fun at the same time. Any info you guys can give will certainly be a help. Thanks for listening and looking forward to the input.

Well good luck!
We'll be going at the end of March. We have only gone to FHL twice before, and have had pigs get just out of reach both times. We're big Camp Roberts and Laguna Mountain fans, but only recently started going to FHL. My suggestions are:
1. Do a search of the forums and read everything you can find about FHL
2. From that, make an ordered list of preferred Training Areas
3. Go there as early on Friday as possible to check in for hunting the next day
4. After you have selected an available Training Area and obtained the map, study it and make a plan
5. Keep in mind that some of the more obvious spots may be occupied by other hunters
6. and finally..."Take the route less travelled"

I'm certain you will be very happy with FHL, and good luch again!

Read through the "FHL Prez Weekend tread." There is a lot of info on there and some of my experiences at FHL. Camp ground is easy to find and I always recommend getting there Friday to check in because if you wait until Sat morning you will probably not get into the field until around 8am.

Also remember that it is lead free ammo only. Look for Barnes Triple X ammo if rifle hunting. Besides outhouses and water hoses there are really no services at the camp ground so bring everything you think you will need or you will have to drive back out to King City.

here is the link to the previous post on FHL

http://www.liggett.army.mil/sites/fishhunt...eklyUpdates.doc

Read line #2 on this doc. What does it supposed to mean? I printed this doc and carried it with me over this past weekend hunting at FHL because my order of copper bullets for my 30-06 did not come in ontime. I showed the guys and gal at the window the document and questioned them about it. None of them have a clue who updated that document and could not give me an honest answer. With a printout of that doc in my pocket, my rifle was loaded with the normal Rem. Corlokt ammo and I has hot after some fresh pig tracks on Sat. morning. Luckily I didn't get check and my buddy arrived later on Saturday evening with our order of non-lead bullets.

L2H--what I read on #2 of Liggett message is that you need to use non-lead bullets for rifle and handgun ammo, slug and sabot should be non-leaded as well. Lead shot shells can be used this hunting year. I don't think it was smart to carry the LIggett message print out along with Rem Core-Lok ammo while hunting on Liggett.

If that's what they meant, it should have been written like that. It's been over 4 years since I've been to FHL and I don't believe this non-lead bullet ban after loosing the battle with the antis so I took advantage of the unclear message just to be there with some friends who planned the trip a few weeks back and check out how's the hunting there. I most likely won't be going back there anymore as I have other places to hunt outside of the condour range. For those of you who are reading my post in this thread, please do not take my advise and do what I did over the past weekend as it may get you in trouble. I was just lucky over the weekend and did not get caught, but if I did get caught I was prepared to fight the battle.

Nice disclaimer Live2hunt......

I am sure that even if that was a misprint that you still could have been in a deep pile of ______ if they caught you. But they didn't.
