This weekend is my FHL 326 Muzzleloader elk hunt. I have never hunted elk before and it has been about 6 years since i have been to FHL so any recomendations would be greatly appreciated.

USMC, congrats on the tag. I have the general tag in December. Based on what information I have received, it will largly depend on what areas are open for hunting. It sounds like this past weekend was kind of a bust for general weapons areas, and not sure how anyone did in primitive areas. I'm not sure what areas will be open for your hunt, whatever are open get up high and glass. I have heard areas 10, 15, 16 and 24 are pretty good if open.

Good luck! Please let us know how you do :prayin :

The way they close areas around there you should bring a muzzleloader and bow. This weekend for the elk hunters was tough. the rest of the week they only have two rifle areas open.

For next weekend the cow areas are, archery 6b,13a,13b, muzzleloader 9, 10, 29, gen weapon 12b, 13w, 19, 20. I would assume they would have yall hunt the same areas as us. I have heard bulls in 20 near 19 and yesterday I saw 2 spike bulls in 13e. I will keep u posted if I see more bulls. See ya down there.

I have been staying at the lodge or driving back and forth to Monterey. We are bringing our son with us tomorrow so we will be staying at lodge. I was not able to hunt today, but I will be back out tomorrow. Both my wife and I hope to fill our tags soon. It has been a really hard hunt so far, I hope the elk start moving more. Also if we are still hunting next weekend we will have a babysitter and my wife and I may camp.

I feel sorry for you all who are doing the elk hunt now because of the limited areas that are open. When I hunted last year in November at FHL, there were a lot of areas open, including 20, 22 and 15. (Be careful of the 12A zoning and 12B. One guy received a hefty fine for shooting an elk in the wrong area.) Jesse had his elk by 7:30 am the first day (his thanks to knowing persons who knew where the elk were). It's a lot to spend about $400 and have areas close. I heard that only Area 25 was open last weekend for elk. Hopefully more areas will open for you.

I will hunt the area of the spray in 13w first thing in the morning if i'am the hunter. 13a is also open so the Elk will just run back and port from that two zone.if you are hunting 10, concentrate your hunt on the canyons around the military vehicle.
Good luck to all of you Elk hunters out there....

Orientation is finished, and now the hard part begins - the wait. Doesn't look like there are going to be many areas open for this week-long hunt. Although, all it takes is one bull. I'm excited to get this hunt started. If I get any sleep tonight, bugling bulls are sure to fill my subconscious.

For those of you who are hunting in CA... it's only $401 for an over the counter B tag in idaho. On top of that in Idaho you can use a non-resident elk tag for bear or deer if you're not having any luck.
