Me and a buddy have been hunting FHL for about 3 years now

. the third time we went was the last weekend of jan 2007, which we do at that time every year. last year we drove five hours from southern califonia showed up early friday . we told the guard at the gate we had a reservation he said no were closed this weekend. iv'e heard that happend before. anyways we went to find a place to hunt in national forest, drove up to king city, drove east through the mountain, searched in and out ,nothing but private lands, if not that then steep terrian. we ended up in big sur it was pouring down and stayed the night at the camp ground. there was a bar however sorry forgot the name got hammerd

and crashed out for a couple hours, woke up the next morning and drove down the 1 and cut west to paso robles, drove around for hours looking for a place to hunt. nowhere. went to a local store and a man told us to go to la panza we went there and searched miles and miles of this place, saw one print that appeared to be a pig but we found nothing. two thousand miles later were traveling down the 101 heading home tired searching for three days with no sleep. anyways does anyone have a back up plan incase this happens again, any other place for private places nowhere is to far as you can tell thanks and well be at FHL feb 23 & 24 hopefully

Coming up from down south you can check Camp Roberts. Not sure what their schedule is these days, but there's decent hunting to be had when it's open.

You can also hit most any part of the Los Padres National Forest, which surrounds the Fort and runs alongside the PCH for miles. Ventana Wilderness Area is close by, and you can also do a little digging at Carrizo Plains.

Get yourself some National Forest Maps and do a little research. There's public land all over the place down there, but you won't find big neon signs pointing at it. The hogs are gonna be hard to find, but they're there.

Yep -- what Speckmisser said. I have humped a few miles to the west and northwest of FHL in the Ventana Wilderness and come across a bunch of sign. This was after more than a few hours pouring over maps and USGS topos. There's not a lot of real estate because the terrain starts to go up and get thick as soon as you leave the base, but there are some spots. One time I met a bunch of guys who slayed 'em out along the Naciamento in the western TA's. I think the piggies bed in the thick hillsides in the NF and then come down into the meadows and cricks on the base at night. There's a shot at an ambush. Good luck.

About 30 miles north of King city is a town called Greefield on 101. If you take Arroyo Seco Rd west it will take you to Los Padres NF which borders FHL on the north. South of King City is another area of the Los Padres NF down towards San Luis / Santa Maria I think it is called Black Mountain or something like that off HWY 166. Those are 2 possible places. I have a friend that has taken a couple hogs off 166 but he lived in the area and hunted it often before he ever saw anything.

Thanks MJB... you rock.

I am almost full this weekend. I've got room on Saturday/Sunday for a few rifle hunts and one cabin left.

I haven't checked the public/FHL land for a while around here. The hogs are on the acorns right now still (we had a great acorn crop this year) so if you wanted to do public/FHL land I would go where the oak trees are. Look for sign- it's everywhere right now. Close to Liggett is Los Padres Nat'l forest 360,000 acres and you've really just got to get out there and look.
