Heading out to fhl in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone else will be there. Not positive but if they open more than just a few TA's I am going for sure. Since it doesn't look like it will be raining much on the next couple of weeks what can I expect? I have been there twice with no luck but was able to find tracks and rooting (it was still sort of wet around the base). What should I look for when it is dry. Anyone willing to give a rookie a few tips? Probably going alone and will be camping. If someone wants to hook up and split a camp site let me know. I will be rifle hunting so any info on TA's other than 29 and 30 would be awesome.

Dirtpoor- you are the lead singer in a mariachi band??? Aren't you kinda, um, well, you know ... too tall for that ? With your sombrero you'd be at 7 foot.

You crack me up. I'll bet your beautiful wife does the dancing and back-up singing (now that I could believe).

KSBerry call me if you'd like to- (he got stuck in traffic last time we tried to hook up) and missed his tour with me. Im super busy with my hunt deal and haven't been over there much to look for FHL hogs, but I have heard a few rumors... it's just the kinda thing where your going to have to get out there and spot though- that's what I do. TA 7, 9, 10/13, 16, 24, 25, 29 & 30 stay in the TA's that are in the "belly" of the Fort along the San Antonio River. There is a big map posted at the game shack that shows how the topo lays. Best advice I ever had- it got me started over there.
The rooting and tracks will be easier after the rain for you too. Get a tracker's book to carry with you (shows animals tracks) and there's some great advice on tracking on my forum that everybody shares with beginners... good luck! Remember, Liggett has a 5% success rate on the hog hunting- they are there- hog hunting is not an easy thing to learn overnight, takes a lot of time in the field.

Pretty much worth the work though. My two cents.

Thanks you two. Yeah I missed a tour that would have probably thought me many things I am still learning. 5% sucess rate at FHL sounds like I still have a few more outings before I am due but that aint going to stop me. Been there three times and all I have seen are deer, turkey, rattle snakes, rabbits...just about everything I was not hunting! NO PIGS. I figure if they open TA 10, 25, or 27 I am going to hit the road on Friday and make my way down there. If only a few TA's are open I may not go. After all it is Cinco de mayo!

We won't be able to make it that weekend either, but we're planning Memorial Day weekend.
Does anyone remember if the campground has the BBQ stands? We've only been there once, and I just can't recall.

I might go since they didn't open up this weekend. We'll talk if they open next weekend.

BLASTMASTER- they do on front half of the campground with fire pit and a table but not in the back side which they call overflow.

Cool! Thanks!
We're going in a tent this time, so it's one less thing to pack. If we get there on Friday, we should be able to get a regular campsite.

Sure am glad I didnt plan on going this weekend...the wntire fort is closed. Hopfully next weekend they will open a bunch of TA's. It looks like Memorial Weekend is the last chance we get until July. The fort is closed the month of June (just in case you didn't know by now).

Question - How is hoggin during the summer months at FHL? I bet they bed down quickly and with very little water and rain this year probably going to be tough. I wonder how the springs will be during the summer months. I found one water hole with tons of signs a few months ago but no piggies early and late in the evening.

I can't make it either, but the idea of you guys singing in public is tempting...
The hunting during the warmer months is usally typical CA hunting. Find water and you will find the animals... There is only 12.5" so far locally, so I would recommend finding a water supply and camping on it...
