I received the following information from a friend up there.

Ok I want to give everyone heads up on what hunting is going to be like on Liggett. Training Areas 8 9 15 16 19 24 and 27 will be closed. Training Areas 2 6 7 10 and 13w will be special weapons restrictions. (Shotgun maybe muzzle loader). These area will be this way resigned. (Don't hold your breath). The safety department is the ones that have done this and the command has signed off on it. Your fees will still be the same with less hunting opportunities. All the Elk hunts on Liggett have been canceled for this year. They might come back next year not sure. Please pass this along to everyone you know that hunts on Liggett.

Sad news.

Thanks Cali. Let us know if you hear anymore on this and if and when they may start it? Does your friend work at Liggett? I think the writing has been on the wall recently and really not that surprised if they do this. 27 has been closed for years and 24 has rarely been open in years,
Thank again.

Few more private hunting ground for the elite....

^^^^ This would not surprise me. Them using those "closed" areas to host hunts for dignitaries and higher-ups in the military. Things of that nature.

I've been putting in the elk draws for a while now. Just got an email that all elk hunts at Ligget are cancelled for 2016 and to pick another hunt.

Hunting apps for 2016-2017 are posted on their website now.

Be aware there is an additional vetting form that is now required with your apps.

Maybe because I'm active duty I've never had to deal with it.

But I've never seen the requirement to send that form in with your app so I figured I'd put it out there.

Does this impact archery hunts as well?

As far as no elk hunts and closed areas yea.

But if you're going for something besides elk looks like you'll have more TA's open to you if you do have a bow.

This is what I received from F&W:

Hello GARY XXXXX,

You are receiving this email because our records indicate you have applied in the past for elk hunts at the Fort Hunter Liggett area.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has announced there will be no elk hunts on the grounds of Fort Hunter Liggett (FHL) in southern Monterey County for the 2016-2017 season.
An active military training facility, Fort Hunter Liggett has sponsored tule elk hunts since 1996. However, the facility’s primary mission is to support military training, and due to increased operational requirements, a portion of the grounds must be closed to the public. The grounds to be closed include a majority of the areas where elk are typically harvested.
The Fort Hunter Liggett Management Deer Hunts J-10, G-8 and A-33 will be unaffected by the closure.
More information about the Fort Hunter Liggett hunting program can be found at http://fhlfmwr.com/hunt.html.
As a hunter, you provide an important dedicated source of funding for management and protection of the state’s wildlife habitat. Purchasing a hunting license and tags also helps support California’s long-standing hunting heritage for today and future generations.
Thank you for hunting in California!

My son drew the FTL Junior Hunt this year. I have not been up there since they instituted the gun registration. How hard is the process? Should I make a trip up there prior to the hunt and get it done or could I go a day early and do it prior to the hunt? Any info would be awesome

Gun reg is easy, made by mail, takes 1-2 weeks to arrive back to you. The FHL hunting permit however, takes a week or two, but you need to pick it up in person at work hours(they take your pictures), so, plan accordingly

You can do everything through the mail. When you do the hunting permit through the mail they'll email you a confirmation number. When you go up for the hunt you can take care of the actual ID card, if the hunt shack is closed the guys in the rec center can do it.

Don't forget the base access vetting form. Go to the website and there's a link in the red banner at the top of the page.
