The Liggett open areas look good for this weekend, but not good enough to get me there on Friday afternoon for an early registration. Gabilan road is closed from Hughes reservoir to the Demo Pit.
I' gonna head on down this afternoon for the weekend. As I posted earlier, if anyone else is headed that way and just wants to meet, shoot me an email.

What area do you plan to hunt? I can send you a GPS track of the boundary.
Military people are usually familiar with the UTM Grid, so I put a grid overlay onto the handout maps with the same two highlighted digits along the collar as the Quadrangle Maps have. They are an old set of maps, so also get a new map from the check station. It really helps to know where your coordinates are on the handout map. Note that the handout maps are NAD27 and the GIS views are WGS84, so the GPS has to be reset. That will hold true to all the new GIS stuff when using a GPS. Well, the military grid reference could be an exception, but I don't know what datum they use nowadays?
My plan is to start with area 29, simply because I understand it gets less pressure. I have never been to FHL before, so its a learning experience for me. I'll keep my options open, though, in case another area looks better. Tips/maps very much appreciated.
If anyone does come down there, I'll be in a Bronze Toyota Tundra with Georgia tags, be staying on the base.
I got to get my permit for FHL. BTW, what happens if you cant get there on Friday for registration. Becuase of my work I cant get out from here till at least 5 or 6 pm. So I dont think there is any point for me to drive there at that time?
If you can't get there for early registration on Friday afternoon, you will stand in line on Saturday morning while the registered hunters go out to their hunting areas before daylight. The line can move real slow on Saturday morning if there are a few hunters who have just received their permits. I usually hunt way back in TA-19, and it takes me a good 30 minutes to get back there. The sun is usually high above the horizon when I finally setup at my stand. If the check station would open at 3 AM it sure would make it easier for the guys who work for a living.
Navy,
I hunted in 29 two weeks ago, and the bottom land is still in tall dead weeds. Horrible looking stuff. The hill land is starting to get in shape, but there isn't much advantage to hunting those hills in 29 over the other of the hills at Liggett. I prefer my 30-06 for pigs, especially this time of the year when they can be found grazing out in the open.
So that means I am royally screwed... Because in order for me to get there on Friday afternoon for a registration I have take Friday off and Saturday off.
I mean can you guys let me in on how you guys go about it? as in check-in Friday, hunt Saturday ? :confused-yellow: :confused-yellow: :confused-yellow:
