Man i wish i would quit taking that last step or three. Saterday i got onto a hog with about ten minuets of shooting light left. I was about 50 yards out when i spotted him. He was busy routing, and i was able to close the distance fairly quick. I was ready to shoot and took that last step and up popped his head and zip, gone in a flash. I stepped off from where i was to where his stood,18 yards. I could have stopped 3 steps earlier and center punched him, no doubt in my mind, but no i had to have that last step or two. O well had a blast stalking him.

Wtpops,
I was in the reg window early saturday morning and there was a bunch of guys, about 10 of them, ahead of me. They all went to your hunt area. I thought you all will overrun each other. I guess they were only there in the morning and you had the whole area to yourself in the evening.

Better luck next time.

Most of the guys that go in there this time of year are bird hunters and spend most of their time on the flats and only stay until noon or so. I spend a lot of time in the back and in the canyons during the mornings and then hunt the flats late in the day. I dont know why everyone leaves so early, when i get back to my truck 9 times out of 10 im the last one out.

Wtpops,
I was in the reg window early saturday morning....

Don't you have to register the Friday before the hunting day? I've never been in FHL before but I've read some where that in order to hunt on a Saturday, the hunter must register in person on Friday and come back the next morning to check-in and pick-up the pass. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Option A:
1) You mail in your hunting permit application along with a money order in the amount of (permit type fee).
2) They will notify you via email or snail mail, which ever you specified on the application, that your permit is ready to be pickup.
3) Plan your trip to FHL on a weekend that they are open (check the website and/or phone recording for updates). Make sure to print out and bring the confirmation that FHL sent you. They will take a picture of you and issue you a card. Then you fill out a day/weekend pass to your choice of one of the open training areas. Your day/weekend pass has 3 copies. White= FHL keep in registration office, yellow = in your pocket, pink = on your vehicle dashboard. Be sure to ask for map.
4) For all future trips, just be at the window during their hours of operations and you can register (fill out your day/weekend pass to hunt in your choice of an open training area.)

Option B:
1) Bring a money order in the total amount (permit type fee + $20 convenient fee) and fill out the permit application at the window whenever the window is open (check the website and/or phone recording for hours of operation). They will take a picture of you and issue you a card. Then you fill out a day/weekend pass to your choice of one of the open training areas. Your day/weekend pass has 3 copies. Hope this help.

You can stay in the camp site 24/7/365 as long as you pay the $10/night, but you have turn in your day/weekend hunt pass as soon as you are done hunting for the weekend. As long as you are inside the campground and not wondering around in training areas you should be ok. I think if you buy a fishing permit, you can register and go fishing at ponds that are opened to fishing during week, but I've not fished in FHL before so I'm not sure.

I know those canyons you are talking about. One guy in our group shot a hog in one of the canyon a couple weekends ago. It lead a good blood trail under the fence. The next morning we ask the guy in the reg window to see if we can get authorized to hop the fence and look for it. All we got was the business card of the game warden. I called the number on the card a couple times but no one pickup on the other end.

That sucks. We were there for the first time this weekend (and I think maybe the same busy TA as you guys) and after 1pm, we hardly saw anyone else both days. Good to know you can stay Sunday night. From the looks of it this weekend you would have the place almost to yourself on Sunday afternoon. The camp was pretty cleared out by 2pm on Sunday.

Im good out to 30 yards but i have this affliction about getting as close as i can. It bites me in the butt sometimes but is fun.
The closest ive ever killed a hog is at 5 feet.
