FHL PERMIT in the mail, anyone want to go?

I finally sent out my application so I should be able to hunt in a few weeks. If anyone wants a partner to go with please let me know I can drive. I am in the bay area :toast-yellow:

I've been lagging on sending mine in. Money is tight right now and have been sticking to local bird hunts here in socal.
I do want to go up there sometime in the next two months, if anyone from socal wants to go.

Just be warned. Another freind who recently told me that the place is very slippery and if you done want to get a $200 Plus tow bill regardless of having 4x4 and mud tires. You should stick to the hard pack stuff. Having a good winch and knowing how to use it does come in handy. Another storm system is on its way and its sure to be even more messy. Have fun and be safe. Take alot pic's even if you get stuck in the mud. It will be good education on how messy that place can get.

I remember about 6 years ago......myself and my buddy were at FHL on area 27?? and it started drizzling....a very, very light rain and we had a 4x4.....but it had street tires, not mud tires. It started slipping and sliding sideways on the way up on a hilly dirt track.....I told my buddy, let's go back home while we are ahead instead of waiting to fall off the edge or get stuck. So we put the 4x4 in reverse and headed downhill backwards. We reached bottom and packed our rifles and we headed straight home. It is not worth the trouble to get stuck and walk back 6-7 miles to the Wildlife Station on slippery, muddy dirt tracks. Or tumble over the edge and wreck vehicle, limbs and bones.

Vandenberg has a lot of areas that are the same way. It never fails though, some idiot(s) think they have a 4x4 with mud tires that they can go anywhere. In the end, all they are doing is tearing the hell out of the back area roads and making them absolutely horrible with ruts when they do dry out.

I have a 4x4 tacoma and back in area 3 in december i needed to engage 4 wheel and diff locker just to get up a little hill, at the end of the day from the morning fog. Long story short plan ahead before you park. Some training area roads are best suited for tracked vehicles. Also i have permit, rifle and bow. All access.

Someone told me it only cost $90 for the year and that it was fairly close to me, said it was a good place to hunt but I have no idea what or where it is...

My buddy and I just got our permits. We will be going up to FHL sometime in March. How does the permit work, do they give you an area and thats it? Or do they list the best areas and you pick? If so can anyone tell me what are preferred areas. Also should I bring a shotgun with slugs just in case they give me a shotgun only field?
I would really appreciate any advice.

A lot was closed from the rain. I think that if it rains this week, the same areas will be open 13b, 29, 5, 9, 16a. Looks like bows, muzzleloaders or shotguns to hunt. So I am in. I am taking my bow and 2 pig tags.
